Help! Non-diabetic cat HYPO!!!

Don't panic! 48 is a perfectly fine number for a cat not receiving insulin. Cats tend to run a little lower (at least have lower meter readings) than humans.

Yes. As long as your cat is not receiving insulin he/she will not hypo (well, pancreatic cancer can cause hypo, but your cat would be extremely sick as well). The 60 - 150 is for diabetic cats and it leaves a little wiggle room at the bottom end. If I saw a diabetic cat at 48 I would be concerned because they could possible still be dropping.

fwiw, i randomly test as many of my furkids as will let me so that i 1. can catch it earlier next time around if someone decides to be extra sweet and 2. so i have a baseline for them. most of mine have been testing in the low 60's but occasionally i get a 40 or 50 something

Second what Cindy said...I test all of mine civie and diabetic alike...most run in the 50-60s including Maxwell which is a diet controlled diabetic and recieved his last dose of insulin way back in november of last year...just a couple days ago he tested 55, but he has given me numbers in the 40s if I wake him up to test him.

Even though they say 60-150 is the best range?

That's the ideal range for a diabetic cat. A non-diabetic may normally have lower blood gluocse levels. I doubt a non-diabetic can become hypo anyways.

Also there's the rumor that the meters run low at the low end so people won't hypo by accident/complacency, so it could be the actual # is say 60 or whatever, but the meter shows it a bit low. Who knows, but that's why the lower numbers don't scare me the way they used to.

Maxwell give your 40s when you wake him up because he figures if he's going to lose sleep, he's gonna try and make sure you do too!
