Hi all,
My cat was diagnosed with diabetes 4 Aug 21, she was admitted 5 days for vet to monitor her BG. I am monitor he BG at home now with insulin treatment. Everythg is well even though it was overwhelming at first. My concern is now she’s rarely pooping sometime 3-4 days not pooping. She hardly drinks water. I changed her diet to canned food completely. Usually i will give shot in the morning while she eating. My vet recommendation if BG above 10mmol i should inject with 0.15ml insulin. Is it somethg i should be worried if my cat not pooping? Sorry for my bad english. English is not my first language

I would add water to the canned food. You could also add a teaspoon of plain pumpkin into the food.

When my cat was backed up (didn't poop in almost 3 days but was eating plenty and seemed fine otherwise), I added a teaspoon of pureed pumpkin and a splash of olive oil for good measure to his food. I was already adding water to each meal as well, so I did that too.
He passed a giant poop a couple of hours later, thank God.
If he had reached day 4 with nothing, I would have taken him to the vet.

With the reduction in carbs, her body might just be having a hard time adjusting to the lack of fiber, so the pumpkin will probably help get things moving.
And if you aren't, try playing with her. Exercise can help move poop along as well.

Hi tq both your reply. I did add a little water yesterday and this morning. She poop this morning and the poop is a little hard and not much. Contact my vet and they ask me to drop by to pick up some medicine for constipation. I will try to add pureed pumpkin to see how it goes. Hope it will works!

Mocha didn't poop for the first 3 days on canned food. Which I thought was odd because I thought the added water would help. But giving him the insulin dramatically cut back his thirst and hunger almost on the first day. He no longer grazes on dry (high carb) kibble all day and doesn't drink nearly as much water as he used to. But I realize now that it was the diabetes which was making him so hungry and thirsty every day. Now that he's getting under control he's acting "normal". After a week or so he's back to his usual once a day or once every other day poop.

It has been almost 3 weeks since the diagnosis but my cat still not pooping like ‘normal’ cat should. Am i worried for no reason? Another thing i am struggling now, this morning my cat BG is 8.8mmol which i think is quite normal so i didnt give her insulin. We then travelling to my parents house and just now at 8:48pm her BG is 14.8 mmol which is high right? But is it due to stress when travelling or should i give her insulin?? So confusing. Because this past 2 days i didnt give her insulin due to her BG is pretty normal. Last time i give her insulin in the morning when her BG is only 10.6mmol and then in the evening her BG drop like 1.5mmol that is very low. Pls help appreciate any advise

Not all cats poop every day. If you are feeding your cat a low carb diet, there's less in the food that your cat can't digest. When on a higher carb diet, there's more for your cat to eliminate. I agree that adding more water to your cat's food may help, especially if the poop. you're seeing is dry.

To help you with your dosing questions we need more information. We relay on a spreadsheet to get a bigger picture of how your cat is responding to insulin. This post on helping us to help you has the instructions. I'm also tagging one of our members who can help you get a spreadsheet set up - @Bandit's Mom
