Help! My cat is still vomiting

I have an 11 year old domestic short hair named Charlie. He has always vomited from time to time but about a year ago it became frequent and we had to take him to the emergency room. He was given fluids and anti nausea medacine. He continued vomiting about every 7 days. He has had 3 blood tests, an x-ray, an ultra sound. The vet diagnosed him with diabetes and put him on insulin. He never stopped vomiting. We changed his food to only wet food and monitored his glucose with a people monitor. About a month ago his glucose was 51 so we stopped insulin. We are monitoring his glucose it hasn't been above 108 so we haven't gave insulin in about a month. The problem is he is now vomiting about every four days. I try to give him pepcid and slippery elm but he refuses to take it. We are desperate.

Can you keep some low carb. kibble out, like Tiki or Orijen? Overnight?

The post is authored by Lisa Pierson, DVM.. She occasionally posts on FDMB. Suggesting dry food, which is dehydrating, is not an appropriate suggestion for a cat that's vomiting.

Can you keep some low carb. kibble out, like Tiki or Orijen? Overnight?

Hi Sylvia Sheaffer, I haven't tried those kinds of foods. He eats Whiskas perfectly Chicken. He keeps it down but about every 4 to 6 days he vomits for about a day. I do keep it out overnight for him. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

The post is authored by Lisa Pierson, DVM.. She occasionally posts on FDMB. Suggesting dry food, which is dehydrating, is not an appropriate suggestion for a cat the is vomiting.

Hi Sienne and Gabby, Thank you for the information. I never knew how bad dry cat food was until Charlie developed diabetes and I started researching.
Charlie's diabetes has went into remission with a total wet food diet. Thank you again.

This is their information on what to do if your kitty is vomiting. It sounds like you've done a lot already. Maybe there are some ideas in the link that can be useful.

Is the only type of food you've been giving Charlie chicken? If so, it's a common allergen. I fed Gizmo only chicken and turkey for most of his life without knowing that it is problematic. He developed IBD which is under excellent control (thankfully). Have you tried a different type of protein?

I have tried royal canin rabbit for three months with no improvement. I suspect it's pancreatitis or IBD but the vet said it was the diabetes and everything would improve with the insulin. Well his diabetes is in remission with no improvement with the vomiting. The vet did give me some Cernia but Charlie will not take pills. We're going to try and find another vet I just wanted to have a record of vomiting and glucose checks before doing this. I am also looking for a better food he will eat. Thanks again!

Many of us feed our cats a raw diet. That's certainly one option and you can get raw novel proteins. I found this website very helpful regarding IBD. They also have a Facebook page where people are very responsive to questions.

While expensive, ZiwiPeak is an excellent brand of food and their canned foods have no gums or carrageenan in their ingredients. They also have novel proteins both in the canned and air-dried raw varieties.

Thanks ! I joined the Facebook group cats with IBD. I will certainly look into the ziwi and raw diets.
