Help, I've created a picky eater.

Hi there,

We are very lucky that through Lantus, following the advice here, and a complete change in diet, our cat is in remission. My cat Aspen used to nibble on his kibble all day long. Now, I feed him canned cat food twice a day. He loves the canned cat food but only when it is fresh and first put in the bowl. He won't touch anything left in the bowl after 30 minutes. Consequently, he's always hungry and always begging for new canned food. It's getting too expensive to keep throwing away what he leaves in the bowl.

Any advice?

Wow, that's a tough one!o_O

Have you ever tried heating the food slightly in the microwave before serving? May sound kind of crazy, but ... my cat seems to prefer her canned food at just-killed-mouse temperature. :rolleyes:
 
I have had similar troubles with my kitties. Have you tried breaking it down onto smaller meals, fed several times a day? That's what helped me; thankfully, I ultimately got it down to just three meals a day!
 
I thought I read that someone was using an automatic feeder and putting mini meals of frozen food in it to be distributed at different times throughout the day. Maybe he'd like something like that?
 
Vegetable dies the same thing, it drives me nuts! What I learned to do is to add a little bit of fresh food from the can to the leftovers in the bowl. It seems to trick veg into eating the rest if her food, if that doesn't work I have 10 other hovers waiting to gobble up any scraps that are left over, lol. Food does not go to waste or last long in my house.
 
Sometimes I can "fake out" my guys by just taking a spoon and stirring up the contents of the dish, but I have to do it where they can see it happen, apparently they must think I'm putting something new and exciting into the bowl, lol.
 
Thanks for all the advice! I nuked his food for a few seconds and he loved it! Licked it clean! Hopefully, he'll be just as enthusiastic tomorrow. :smuggrin:
 
Sometimes when Snickers turns her nose up at he food when hubby makes it I pretend to stir it and then she thinks it great...lol
 
Hey there, some good ideas above. I have the same problem with my civvie cat. He grazes all morning on his breakfast. I jus keep taking it up and putting in back into the can (inside a zip lock baggie) and taking it out again when his majesty comes back inside from a morning stroll. Sometimes, nuc it for about 5-10 secs. I know what you mean about throwing out all the food. I used to do that but who can do that anymore when you have test strips, needles, and insulin to buy?
