Help! How do you transition from Vetsulin to other types?

I plan to see my vet on Wednesday and want to talk to him about switching from Vetsulin given the problems with it being inconsistent. My vet is used to using this type though and I don't believe he's familiar with others, so I'll likely have to do a lot of education. I can print off info on PZI, Levimir, and Lantus, but don't know if the dosing in units is different with these medications than with Vetsulin. I'll likely have more luck getting him to switch if I can provide information that helps him feel confident about how to do the transition.

I looked at the forums but wasn't sure if there was a post or other link that explained how to transition insulin. My vet is really nice, but it is a simple rural practice and he's not an internist or cat specialist. That said, he's not timid about seeking help when he needs it and is very used to me by now coming in with articles to read, etc. I tend to do a lot of research and so far we've managed together to keep my kitties alive through crises he wasn't sure either would survive. Most of his clients don't bother to keep their cats alive when they get such diagnoses, but lucky for Tabriz and Shaikha, their mom is pretty darn stubborn. The fact that both cats are also good fighters and trust me helps. :)

Any help appreciated. I thought I'd better post in a different thread than my introduction thread as was getting long and information might get lost in there.

I am not certain that the health links cover transitioning insulins...but it IS Monday and maybe I'm missing it...

Either way, my suggestion is that you go to the lantus and pzi subgroups and look for the 'stickied' information posts on each insulin type. THese posts include information on how to dose, etc. I would also look at the petdiabetes wikipedia articles on each insulin - for PZI look at prozinc, and then the lantus/glargine and levemir ones.

Jen,

it doesn't - I was editing my post possibly at the same time you were typing, I added "food" to my first sentence, just to be clearer.
