My cat is wobbly and his hind legs aren’t working well. I gave him a gabapentin 2 hours ago, to prepare him for today’s vet appointment, so I’m hoping that’s what this is from, but I’m a little freaked out. I started giving him insulin on Sept 20, and I haven’t been home monitoring yet (the purpose of the vet appointment tomorrow is to learn how). In a scramble in the middle of the night, I attempted my first ever home test, and his number was 226 on a pet monitor. Should I retest or is this likely accurate?? He’s on Lantus, getting 2units 2xs/day. This reading came 10 hours after his last injection

Cats with unregulated diabetes can get neuropathy, which is weakness in the back legs, so it’s possible your kitty may have it. It can be helped with a form of b12 and if you search this forum, you’ll find other posts about it :cat:

Well done on the home testing! The first ones are usually the hardest, so hopefully it gets easier from here on out! 226 on a pet meter is not bad at all, but definitely keep trying to get more tests so you can see the bigger picture of how your kitty is doing!

Hi and welcome to FDMB Hilvermore20. Gabapentin can make a kitty wobbly, but if this continues it may be neuropathy (weak back legs due to high BG levels). Getting the cat's blood sugar regulated is the most important treatment, but a B-12 supplement:
Zobaline (Methylcobalamin - aka - methyl B-12) helps a great deal. You can read about it here.
Congratulations on home testing, that's one of the best ways to keep your cat safe and see how the insulin is working.

Would you take a little time and create the signature and set up the spreadsheet so we can see your kitty's information each time you post?

1. Setting up your signature (light grey text under a post). Here's how:
click on your name in the upper right corner of this page
click on "signature" in the menu that drops down
type the following in the box that opens: kitty's name/age/date of diabetes diagnosis/insulin you're using and dosage amount /glucose meter you're using/what (s)he eats/any other meds or health issues (s)he has. You can add your name, and a geographic location (sometimes the country/time zone matters) Be sure to SAVE when you are finished.
2. Another thing that will help us help you now that you are BG testing at home is to set up a spreadsheet like the one we use here. You will see how the trends and patterns emerge, and members can review his/her progress before offering suggestions or advice:

You can read about Lantus and how it works HERE. There is a lot of information, but you can post in that forum for help understanding, asking questions etc. The Main Forum here is mainly for issues, questions and concerns with diet, testing, other general concerns.

Best wishes to you and your kitty, I'm very glad you are here to learn, help your cat, and join our community.

If anyone wants to save money I used to but Zobaline until someone on here told me about this brand, it's the same thing

Hi this can save you some money on the Zobaline
Vitacost-Vitamin-B-12-Methylcobalamin-844197016143.jpg

For 60 pills it's 17.57 and for 100 pills its 23.92
Same thing
The only difference with the Zobaline is it has 200 mcg of folic acid
So I just buy folic acid in the store 400 mcg and cut them in half and crush it
The Vit B from Vitacost comes in capsule form it's red , so just empty it into the wet food and the folic acid , mix it up. The Zobaline is a pill so you have to crush it up
The Vitacost brand is 5000 mcg and the Zobaline is 3000 mcg that is ok
The cats will pee out what's not needed .

A lot of times the Vitacost brand has buy one get one half off and free shipping in the qty of 100 .

Hope this helps
I see the Zobaline is now 44.00 with shipping, unbelievable
