Hi, everyone. I posted a few days ago that my cat just got recently diagnosed
Due to diet change recommendations I have some concerns. I got his new food today Wellness Minced Chicken Dinner and Turkey Entreé. But I'm worried since I don't know how to do the change of diet. Should I removed the insulin for a day and test his BG Levels during the day? I'm using Caninsulin I'm worried bc this insulin drop levels faster (I'm planning to change to Lantus)
I'm having some issues testing his BG but today I will do it every 2 hours has you can see in the SS. I don't really know the ideal scheduled, I give Sebastian food every time he asks for it. Is that okay?
I'm aware that you should remove food 2 hours prior testing is that only for AMPS and PMPS right?
Sorry for all the questions

The Wellness Chicken dinner is 10% carbs (just the edge of low carb) and the Turkey is 13% so we would consider it medium carb. But that makes both lower carb than what you have been giving. I would suggest a slow transition of food. Replace maybe just 10% of his original food with the new food, and see what impact it has on his blood sugar numbers. Then increase the amount of new food by an additional 10% the next day. A cats digestive system will do better with a slower food transition too.

As for food, you should be feeding his main meal 20-30 minutes before the shot of Caninsulin. You can feed smaller meals during the rest of the cycle, but it's best if it's mostly in the first half of the cycle (time between shots). And for now, try not to feed in the two hours before you test his blood sugar, or the numbers will be inflated by that food. We want to make sure his blood sugar is safe to shoot.

I'll start with the cans I already bought and look for other alternatives, thank you very much for answering my questions. Also thanks for attaching the link from my previous post
I have another question. Do you have any experience with Lantus? And how do you make the change from one insulin to another. Do you maintain the dose? (1u every 12 hrs)

My girl started on Caninsulin and switched to Lantus. It was a much better insulin for my girl, but I started on too low a dose per the vet. Typically we switch to around the same Lantus dose as they were getting on Caninsulin, but we consider how they are doing on the Caninsulin dose too. Meaning, if they are close to normal numbers on Caninsulin we might lower the Lantus dose a bit. But with the numbers Sebastian is seeing, I would start with 1 unit. And yes, you maintain the same 12 hours apart. So you can start Lantus 12 hours after Caninsulin.

You also need to get U-100 syringes instead of the U-40 you are using with Caninsulin. See if you can get syringes with 1/2 unit markings on them.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience :bighug::bighug:

The other difference with Lantus vs Caninsulin is that you do not have to feed your cat and wait 20 - 30 min before you give a shot. With Lantus, you can test, feed, and shoot within minutes. Lantus takes about 2 hours to start to work vs Caninsulin which starts to work far more quickly.

I'm linking a food chart in case you don't have the information. It will give you the carb counts on most of the canned foods available in the US.
