My kitty is a poorly controlled diabetic so far. He's 6 units of Lantus 2x daily, sugars stil in the 300-400's. 1 month ago he was diagnosed w/ a UTI which developed into a kidney infection 2 weeks ago. He was hospitalized for that for 4 days, put on stronger antibiotics & on pain meds ( Buprenex) ever since. Throughout this whole time (starting 1 month ago) I noticed he woulnd't sit his butt totally to the ground and when laying on his side, his butt was always elevated. We all assumed it was maybe a burning sensation in his genitals or pain from the kidneys. He seemed to be getting better though all the way around though & I am still to give antibotics for 6 weeks. Suddenly on Sunday he stopped eating & was EXTREMELY painful & hunched & his butt even more elevated. I noticed the base of his tail looked a bit enlarged too. He had xrays & ultrasound yesterday & they didn't show any masses or stones. Bloodwork shows elevated globulins which could be a sign of infection or cancer . He pees & poops no problem & he didn't seem to be in pain when the dr touched his kidneys although the whole rear area of his body is sensitive it's mainly his BUTT/TOP of TAIL. He's on stronger pain meds & it's taking the edge off but he still looks so uncomfortable. My main question: HAS ANY OTHER DIABETIC CATS SHOWN SIMILAR SYMPTOMS WITH THE BUTT BEING FAVORED & ELEVATED? Could it be weird neuropathy? Please any ideas are appreciated.

Hi guys .. gosh, what a situation you have going on .. I don't have any experience with what you are dealing with, but hopefully others will be along soon and can help out!

Hmmm - the only thing that comes to mind is an abscess. Any chance that he might have been bitten by another cat? It seems that all the antibiotics should have taken care of an abscess, but the only thing in my limited experience that somes to mind.

No he's strictly indoors, and the tests showed negative for abcesses, etc.

what about anal gland rupture? that is quite painful. is there any discharge, funny smell?

Re: HELP!! Cat keeping Butt off the ground- in a lot of Pain

My cat, Kitty, has had it all recently.

But, yes I have noticed this in her. She does sometimes sit with her butt on the ground, but especially when eating she keeps her butt elevated. My Kitty is arthritic and has a bad knee, and that is what I attribute it to--but, I am not sure what is causing it.

Re: HELP!! Cat keeping Butt off the ground- in a lot of Pain

My thoughts are a ruptured or severely impacted anal gland. Did the vet try to express his anal sacks? My kitty Jazz has arthritis and can't reach around very well anymore. She sometimes needs the vet to help her express her analy sacks.... VERY SMELLY and MESSY and EXTRA EXTRA PAINFUL if they are the vet may even have to sedate to get it all out.

Thanks for all the replies... No there is no smell whatsoever... He's on Buprenex & that is definitely helping but I can't afford it at $137 a week!!

Suzie used to keep her butt off the ground when she had a unrinary tract infection. She got them often. I don't think this is usual for cats to do but I thought I would leave you know.
