Hi,
I am new to this board. My name is Lisa and my sweet cat is Apollo. Apollo is diabetic and he is my second diabetic cat. Apollo is a very thin cat and I'm doing what I can to find a low carb catfood that he will like and eat. He has become very finicky. I've tried about five brands of catfood so far such as Innova/EVO, Wellness regular and Core, Blue Buffallo, Friskies and now Nutro. He absolutely loves the Nutro, but I'm worried that what I'm feeding him may have high carbs (partially because he loves it so much). The list has the flavors I'm giving him, but I'm not sure if the flavors are the versions I'm giving him.

He's eating:
Nutro Max Cat - Lamb and Turkey Cutlets in Gravy Sauce
Nutro Natural Choice - Chicken and Liver Formula Chunks in Gravy

Does anyone know what the carb % is in these and if it is safe + below 8%?

Thank you.

Lisa

Most of the Nutro canned foods are too high in carbs. The two you are feeding are not on the food chart but you can see how many carbs the other varieties have: http://binkyspage.tripod.com/CanFoodOld.html

In general, anything in gravy is usually too high in carbs for a diabetic cat. But they are great to use in the event of a hypo so keep a few cans around.

Have you tried Fancy Feast? Many cats will eat that. If not, just keep trying various brands of low carb foods. My cat was finicky too so what I did was buy one can of each variety for a bunch of different brands and give my cat a small sample to try out. Using that method I was able to find out what brands my cat liked to eat. The "icky" opened cans of food were given to a friend whose less finicky cats gobbled them up.

Thank you Larry and Sqeem 3.

These flavors are listed on the food chart, but it does not indicate in gravy; although the turkey one does say cutlets. I did call the brand company and they informed me that one was 1% and the other 3%, but I also know their calculations are different so its hard to compare.

He was so thin that I thought I was going to lose him because he nearly stopped eating all together. I wish there was a way to find out if these will be o.k. for him or not. Any of the pate's he doesn't like. I'll look at the fancy feast as an option, but man...he loves the Nutro. And the flavors on the list are not available to buy aside from the ones I bought. Too confusing.

From a conversion standpoint, Nutro calculated the other ingredients + carbs to find out the %. I think I'll call them again tomorrow and ask for someone else who specializes in their ingredients. I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh the Fancy Feast are kind of high in carbs. I was informed that it is best to keep the carbs to approx. less than 7-8%. I'm still confused by deciphering what the appropriate calculations are on the list vs. what the manufacturers share. If you have some insight here, I'm happy to learn.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Many of the regular fancy Feast varieties are under 10% carbs. They are listed on the "old" food chart: http://binkyspage.tripod.com/CanFoodOld.html The ones listed on the "new" food chart are the Elegant Medley ones which are over 10% carbs.

The values on the food charts were calculated from "as fed" numbers that were obtained (and sometimes not very easily) from the pet food companies. Sometimes the numbers given aren't even "as fed" numbers :? Janet has info on her food tables here that explains "as fed" numbers and why they provide more useful info than what pet food companies put on packaging labels: http://binkyspage.tripod.com/foodfaq.html
