Anyone have kitty around 14 yrs have to have dental extractions.If so how many teeth extracted and how did they do with the procedure and recovery.

Hi. My Willow has had a lot of extractions. She is almost 17 1/2. Her last extractions were a year ago. I do not remember right off the top of my head how many teeth it was. She also had some the year before. She actually has very few little teeth left now. She did fine recovering from her procedures. I take my girls to a dental specialist who I love. I take it your cat is about to have extractions?

Whispy was estimated to be between 10-14 years when we adopted him, and we took him to our vet immediately for a once over. Our vet found 1 canine that was broken off, and a terrible ear infection with horrible yeast.
We'd only had him 24 hours so didn't even have a good idea about his BG but our vet didn't want to wait. Whispy did GREAT. We got full bloodwork the day of our once over, and scheduled the surgery for the following day. Our vet kept a really close eye on him and extracted the broken one first, and we knew she was prepared to ditch him out of anesthesia at any time (my biggest concern) if there were issues. There were not -- he also had another canine extracted and some molars, and while the vet was doing his teeth, the techs cleaned his ears really well, and they were able to shave off some mats. We did give him pain meds after, and he was back to food late the night of the procedure.

Chloe is 15 and had several teeth extracted. She did not have any problems and definitely felt a lot better afterwards.
Years ago I had another cat that had to have all of his teeth except his canines removed. Since he was already on wet food, he had no problems eating after the dental. I did have to puree his food for about a week since his gums were sore

Zippy had his first dental with some extractions at the age of 20. He also had kidney disease and high blood pressure so my vet and the anesthesia tech took all necessary precautions and monitored him closely. He came home like it was no big deal and demanded his supper. We lost him a few months ago shortly after his 22nd birthday.
Most of my cats haven't really needed dentals until they were in their mid-teens and they've all done fine.

Shadow had to have all her fangs removed at 14. She had most of the others out as well by then. But her fangs had hairline cracks since she had FORL - feline ondotoclastic resorptive lesions. Losing all her fangs was a major adjustment for her. She had to re-learn how to eat. I would cut all her food up and then push it around the plate separating little bits , she needed it in little chunks to pick up but it took weeks and it really affected her mojo. She was alpha over our dogs and losing her teeth made her a little docile. I would liken it very much to a person having their teeth pulled . It was a major adjustment for her but she did adjust and she was back on top, bossing those doggies around.

My kitty had his first dental at 14 with our regular vet, and had 8 teeth removed.
When he was 18 he had an appointment with a cardiologist first and had an echocardiogram done to make sure his heart was okay, and then since he had some kidney disease too he went to a dental specialist with a dedicated anesthesiologist and had 8 more teeth removed including a badly infected canine.

There are no dental specialist anywhere in the area that I live, so when Buddy needed 1 of his fangs pulled our regular vet's office pulled his tooth. He had several issues, his stitches disappeared twice and had to be re done once, he needed to be on antibiotics for a while. Then right after that he got a terrible case of pancreatitis, he had to be hospitalized twice and things were really iffy for a while. In the back of my mind I believe the tooth removal had something to do with his pancreatitis. Buddy has chronic pancreatitis and has had for years, but this was on a whole different level.
