HELP! +2.5 IS 52! SPRATS 1/31

Just checking in on Sprats...How we doing this morning, I saw the 911 last night but it was right as the board was going down so didn't get a chance to check in. Hope everything is well.

I realize that you have this covered on Lantus, but since this is a cat that's been FD for 3 years and then suddenly is having insulin sensitivity being that she first came here after her cat was at the vet for severe hypo, have things like Hyperthyroidism, IBD, Pancreatitis or other underlying issues other than dry food been mentioned?

I appreciate the wealth of knowledge on Lantus, but sometimes on Health you may find information that is helpful.
 
He hasn't had dry food today. Just chicken and a 1/4 can of Friskies tuna and egg.
The last time I was at the vet with him, they did a complete cbc on him. She said everything looked good (kidneys, blood cells, etc).
 
I just took a peek at your spreadsheet, that is a heck of a jump after getting his insulin this morning..is it possible that it was a fur-shot? Not that I have a whole lot of personal experience with Lantus as Max went into remission fairly quickly, but I don't remember any jumps like that.

It could have been - he is very long haired. He is only getting .5, so it was hard to tell. I thought it went in though.

I ran out of strips and am in the middle of a blizzard... my husband went out to get some more - are they really $66? for 50? Yikes. It is the Freestyle Freedom
 
Jenn, did the vet do a T4 to check for Hyperthyroidism. There may not be an issue, but some senior kitties will have a normal T4 but it could be on the high side, if on the high side, hypert could be considered an issue.

Is his appetite off?
 
yeah they are pretty expensive in the stores.

fwiw, i buy mine online, usually on ebay and can get really good deals if i keep my eyes open. at the very least you can get them for about half local retail prices at places like

also fwiw, i've used the freestyle meters since Mousie was first diagnosed and just so you know, the strips are good past the expiration date printed on the packaging so don't let that deter you from taking advantage of a good deal if you see it on ebay. i recently picked up about 1500 strips for around $300 i think it was :shock:
 
I sent the free style becuase I was told the strips were the least expensive...was I wrong???? Just asking this question k? Could the spike be a lantus reaction in his system?
 
lori, it's a name brand meter so the strips cost about the same as all the other name brands, i.e. aviva, contour, freestyle lites, one touch's, etc.....

the only meters with "cheap" strips are the store brand meters or off-shoots you can only find on the web

unless of course you buy strips online :-)
 
I don't know if the vet did or not. It was a rough day. She did the test to tell us if anything else besides his diabetes was wrong with him, so that we could make the decision to put him down or not. :( She said everything was great so we decided not to.
 
Hon, even if it were hyperthyroidism that is a very simple pill a day disease. not terrible.
 
jen, just a reaction (ECID) that did'nt agree with his body and produced a liver reaction.
any 'reaction' could cause stress. did not know if this had happened before. i remember a kitty once having his first dose and ....well, i don't want to talk about it here.
 
He hasn't had any liver problems that I know of. This is day 3 with Lantas. Yesterday it went up a bit too. They are saying he is really carb sensitive?
 
Hmm....

looks to me like a food spike as he's had this before, correct? Some cats are extremely carb sensitive so if you didn't do a fur shot, I'd look to the WD as the culprit.
 
oops, shoot, forgot he didn't have WD today.

ok, I'm hoping this is one of those weird one-off things that cats do to mess with us. Will be interesting to see what his +1 and +2 are after his next shot or two...
 
Jenn, what was he eating before you came to this board? He's been on insulin for a few years and seemed good during that time, correct? Without hometesting it's hard to say that he was regulated, but overall was how was he, did he seem like he was doing fine or did he hide a lot and get grouchy? I mention hiding and grouchy simply because when Tucker was on humulin and PZI years ago he'd get grumpy when his numbers were swinging too much.

I'm wondering if Sprat has always been carb sensitive or if this is something new.
 
He has been eating FF and Friskies. He actually seems to be feeling alot better than he has in the past few years! Now, that is...
 
The FF and Friskies, is that canned only? Did he used to eat dry before you came here?

That's great that he's feeling better.

When my cats all switched from PZI to Levemir I could tell immediately that they felt better. They weren't scrunching their heads as if they had headaches, they were playing more, it was a nice change.
 
Yes, he was eating dry W/D and M/D. he still sits at the bowl and cries for dry. I am trying to wean him off. He has not had it today.
 
My cats tell me all the time that they are starving...then I ask their dad who informs me that they've not been starved, in fact, they've had their share and more :) Dry food can be an addiction but as long as he's getting enough calories from the canned food, he's fine. Just maybe not happy :shock:
