Hello, my cat just got diagnosed with diabetes like a month ago. I been giving him two doses of insulin every day. One in the morning and one in the pm. I try to give it to him at the same time. I’ve never had problems with him not eating on the contrary; he loves to eat. If he could he would eat every 20 min. He has been getting healthy again but I’m still new at this. I plan on getting a glucose testing kit but I have yet to get one. Which ones do you guys suggest I get? Also, he ate this morning but he has yet to eat in the pm and that’s really rare for him. He threw up a tiny hair ball. But he still won’t eat. Should I get worried? I have some Keto sugar thing but what if he’s just not hungry... I already emailed his vet but I’m not sure she’s going to answer cause it’s the weekend.

Welcome. Sorry for the diagnosis but you've come to the right place. Which insulin? What is the dose? What are you feeding?

You will want a meter that takes a small sample (0.3-0.5). Many use the Walmart relion prime. I use the Alphatrak.

You will also want to get extra test strips and 26-28 gauge lancets.

I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home.

He gets one tiny unit of the Lantus insulin. And he eats only wet food the friskies from purina. Sometimes he kinda eats a bit of the fancy feast but he likes purina better. I’ll look up those kits. Thank you for replying I’m kinda freaking out tbh. I have read all the forums about the symptoms and they are scary. He doesn’t smell bad but his breath tbh always stinked. So idk. I think he’s nauseous because he smells the food and he swallows a lot. Like he wants to vomit @JanetNJ

I would get a human meter as the test strips are much cheaper than the alphatrak meter and our dosing methods are based on the human meters. Walmart have ReliOn meters which are not at all expensive.
There is a lot to learn but we are here to help you.

I will get him one I have the prodigy one because my dad is diabetic but I don’t have the test strips. Is this one a good reader? Also, he hasn’t eaten since 10 am. But he does drink water. He’s sleeping a lot too. Vet told me not to inject him if he does not eat.

If he is still not eating, I would try and get him to eat what ever he will eat. It is important that he does eat. Any food is ok at this point.
I would also go out and buy a bottle of Ketostix from a pharmacy or Walmart and test the urine for ketones, it’s a simple test. You just need to dip the test strip into the urine and read the result against the colours on the bottle exactly 15 seconds later. Anything above a trace of ketones needs vet attention.
I don’t know the prodigy meter but if it’s a human meter it should be ok. You will need to get the appropriate strips for it.
If your kitty is still not eating in the morning I would ring the vet. He may be nauseated and need an antinausea medication.

Not eating and not getting insulin in a diabetic cat needs to be resolved quickly so get vet attention please.

He started eating this morning. Last night he a bit because I put some temptation treats in there. When stores open I’ll got get the strips. I also emailed his vet. They don’t open until Monday but they still reply to emails on the weekends. Overall he looks better. Yesterday he was sleeping a lot and was definitely not interested in food. This morning he did his usual meow but did not like the usual wet food. So I might have to change it up. Most definitely going to start testing. And trying this methods that I read about on this page.
