Hi everyone!

Salem is a 16-year-old black cat who was recently diagnosed with diabetes on the 16th of February after going for an eye infection. It seems that she had for a big majority of her life. But because she wasn't brought to vet regularly for the 11 first years of her life(she lived at my Mother-in-law's), it was never diagnosed. She got fat after her accidental pregnancy when she escaped the house for a couple of weeks before she got spayed.

She is a fat, lovable kitty who is always hungry, and adores my Boyfriend to pieces! Salem also tolerates our other cat, who gets a bit too jealous when we give her attention. Even though we gave him ton and half just a few minutes earlier

She is now on Lantus, and we give her 3-4 IU per day.

She eats Purina DM, but we are going to switch in the next week to Friskies. DM is way too expensive for our student budget.

Her infection turned out to be a cherry eye, which is unusual for a cat, and even more unusual in an older cat.

Welcome.
Lantus is a good insulin. It is best to get the 5 pack of 3 ml disposable pens via a 10 ml vial. Although per ml the vial is less expensive most cats will not use up a 10 ml vial before the insulin goes bad/becomes ineffective.
Most of us here test our cat's blood glucose at home using a human meter. We test before each shot and periodically between shots. We record our reading and other info in a spreadsheet. See:

Is the 3-4 units twice daily? 3-4 once daily? Or 1 1/2 -2 twice daily?
3-4 units twice daily is a high starting dose. Almost all cats need to be dosed twice daily.
Here is a list of commercial low-carb canned which includes Friskies.

it's 1.5 to 2 UI twice daily. Sorry for the confusion!

Also, we have the 3 ml refillable vial, so we should be ok. Should we throw away the vial after one month of use, or we can continue using it until it turns cloudy/become ineffective?

Thank you for the welcome!
