I'm Carol and I'm just about to go to the vet to collect my cat Rosie who has been hospitalised since last Friday with ketoacidosis (I had no idea she was diabetic, how stupid am I?). I feel really guilty that I let her get so ill without realising but she spends a lot of time outdoors so I don't really see her drink and we.
Anyway she is fifteen (today!) and is about to come home on insulin and I'm scared. I know I have to do it and I will, I'm keen to home test too but she is a feisty cat and I think it will be a battle.
I'll have more info when I get back but just wanted to introduce us.

Hi Carol and welcome to the board.

Getting a diagnosis of diabetes for our furkids is a very scary and overwhelming experience, but with all the information and support of the many experienced people here you will be fine. Most people do not realize that their kitties have diabetes because they hide it very well. With Rosie spending time outdoors that makes it even harder to notice.

One thing that is very important is to be able to do home testing. This will allow you to know how Rosie is responding to the insulin. After having an experience of DKA (ketoacidosis ) home testing can be even more important. Most kitties are not overly fond of having their ears poked for home testing but with time and patience most kitties get very good about it.

Once you have more information from your vet such as the type of insulin, how many units (dose) you are to give. etc you can post over on the Feline Health forum to get more feedback. This is the link to that forum:
