Onslo, my Scottish Fold boy, was diagnosed about 5 or 6 weeks back. He also has Feline Herpes which seems to be adding to the problem. He is on Levemir and gets 1/2 unit in the morning. It's all he seems able to tolerate.
He's eating well but not nearly as active as he was.

Home testing the blood glucose will help you monitor him and keep him safe, especially if you decide to change his food at all. All you need is an inexpensive human glucometer like the Target Up and Up or WalMart ReliOn Confirm or Confirm Micro, matching test strips, and lancets for alternate site testing (25-28 gauge), plus a bit of determination. Practice on a piece of fruit, like an apple or grape, then on yourself to get a feel for it and the timing of the meter's use.
Also begin teaching your cat to allow his ears and/or feet to be massaged a bit while you hold him and give a low carb treat each time. Freeze dried chicken (ex Purebites) works well with many cats.

Levemir, the same insulin I use, should be given twice a day.....every 12 hours (the same as Lantus). While these insulins were designed for humans, who only need one shot a day, the metabolism of cats is much faster and to keep the insulin level fairly stable throughout the day requires shots about every 12 hours.
