Boney James was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He is a 10 year old male neutered grey tuxedo kitty found as a feral. He has ruled the roost as a large easy going guy until an new feral was introduced a year ago. Scooter Poot is a black tuxedo cat with one eye and nine toes. He is a punk and starts things he can't finish. I believe that Boney's diabetes onset is related to to Scooter and his desire to be the boss cat. Boney is having none of it and the change is noticeable.
I have not been able to get his glucose regulated yet and have been giving him Prozinc. He is currently at 4 units after 6 weeks with some minor results (2 weeks on Vetsulin which I quickly changed), currently he has swings between +400 down to 232 and average of about 6 hours at or above 400. In a 24 hour period, he will have a total about 10 to 12 hours on the high side and the remaining hours between 230 and 400. I have been working on correcting his food to higher protein, very low carbs and low phosphorous. I have converted his food to "Smalls" which is a subscription food which comes frozen that is supposed to be all meat but after digging deeper, they also have green beans and kale in the food. Has anyone tried this food and is it worth it? I have been studying the food chart on this forum and now I am leaning toward the TIKI Dark Night food. I have removed the dry food from Boney's diet which does not make him happy but he is dealing with it as he gets more wet food that way. I also keep him separated from the other cat unless I am there to make sure no fights break out.
Trying to get the food to help regulate the glucose has not proven to be easy. I want to be able to control the glucose with food if possible and get him off the glucose if possible. I have been using the Libre sensor 3 on Boney and he doesn't seem to mind. It does make me feel better for tracking purposes. I would like to see more consistency though. I am open to any and all recommendations. I thank you in advance.
