I’m Mike. My boy cat’s name is Squinky. Well actually when we adopted him it was Shadow and then my wife, decided he looked like a Remy. And he was for a bit but Squinky just popped into our heads and that’s definitely who he is. 100% a Squinky!

Anyway he’s 15 now. He was on insulin about 2 years ago. Switched him to Purina DM (sorry I didn’t know) and he immediately went into remission and has been ever since.

So why am I here? Whelp……Squinky needs a better food. I’ve done as much research as I’ve been able to and feel like Tiki Cat After Dark diets may be great for him. I THINK they are around 5% carbs and have a decent balance or muscle meats with some organs.

I’m worried my decision to slowly switch him to this food could harm him if I’ve made a mistake in my research and cause him to once again need insulin. This would be horrible cuz he’s my most fav boy ever!

Can anyone confirm this food would be nice for an in remission kitty?

Also I’ll pop in here occasionally and try to be a bit more involved. I know what it’s like to fumble through giving insulin injections. Does it hurt him? Ohhhh no did I do it wrong? Is kitty gonna be mad at me? Etc etc. It’s actually quite funny the array of emotions I’ve been through. And I wish I’d have communicated with a group like you all during those tense moments.

Hi Mike and Squinky and welcome to the forum.
Ill give you a link to low carb wet foods.
Is the DM you are feeding wet or dry?
It wont harm him to switch to a low carb food at all.
Are you monitoring the BGs monthly to see he is staying in remission?
FOOD CHART
Look for foods under 10%...preferably around 4-7% carbs
You will find Tiki foods in this chart. Weruva is another good brand. Also Fancy Feast

Wow thank you kindly! No I’m not monitoring the BGs. That must mean blood glucose? So I need to read up on that and do the ear prick thing for blood? I’ll get on it! Again thank you for the link and reply!

Ooops! Mostly feeding him wet DM but he loves the dry kibble so I add some of that also. I know the wet is much lower carbs but mostly liver which isn’t optimal and is why I’m seeking to slowly change his diet. Eventually I’d like to make his food here at home.

Hi!

someone just posted this today on another thread and since you mention wanting to feed home made, I’m pasting it below :cat:

It you are interested in learning about feline nutrition, Lisa Pierson, DVM is a vet who has a wonderful website on the topic. She has sections on different medical conditions, including diabetes. She also is strongly in favor of a raw diet and has information on how to make your own cat food. She provides a recipe. The downside is that with her recipe, you have to purchase all of the supplements individually. There are companies that make pre-mixes. These are powders that you mix with water and add to the raw food. The pre-mix contains all of the supplements that are needed to make a nutritionally complete diet. Many people here use a pre-mix from FoodFurLife. You can buy ground meat at the grocery store or grind your own. Either way, while some vets are not fans of a raw diet, there are many vets who support using a raw diet given the lack of fillers or other less than desirable ingredients in commercial cat food.

Hi Mike fellow cat Dad here, after hemming and hawing about it for months I finally took the dive into making food for my boy Hendrick, who is also a diet controlled diabetic feline in diabetic remission. I use the powder from FoodFurLife and mix up a batch using raw chicken, pork loin, turkey thighs, and chicken thighs. The cats LOVE IT so much. Takes me probably 10 minutes to whip up a batch with a food processor, and it makes me so happy knowing I made it myself and it is so good for them. Other people like @AbbottTheCat cook the meat, iirc, and make larger batches. People do that and freeze it in portions so they can thaw and serve, I've never done it that way.

Tiki Cat After Dark is all medium carb, rather than low carb—between 11% and 17%, I believe. If you check on Chewy they have a response to a customer question where they state the carbs on a dry matter basis. So that particular line of Tiki Cat food may not be the best for a remission kitty.

Sharing it here for easy reference (only including the "dry matter" chart since it's the one to follow): This was sent by Tiki Cat
