Hello! I'm new here and very grateful to have found this resource. Thank you!

I will be spending the next couple of days combing through all of the information here, and will likely post lots of questions in other threads.

A little about me and my furbabies--
Well, more about the furbabies. :)

I'm a cat momma to two cats. Stella and Cliff. Cliff is the newly diagnosed diabetic cat. He is my little man and my heart broke a little when we got the diagnosis. (We noticed he was losing weight, while eating more and brought this up at his recent wellness exam. Lab work and fructosamine test later and we have our diagnosis.)

I'm scared and nervous, but trying to be strong for him.

We are picking up his insulin & getting a demo on how to inject on Tuesday 11/1. I know he will be on Prozinc 1 unit twice a day. The vet also suggested Purina DM, but she gave me a whole list of OTC foods that will work too. I picked up quite a variety at Petco on Saturday-good to have options for my historically picky eater (who was also on grain-free diet up until now to manage allergies.)

Our vet also recommended AlphaTRAK 2 for home monitoring.

That's all for now.

Welcome! Prescription food is totally not necessary.... Low carb wet is what he needs. Glad you found this site... So helpful!

Welcome. You can do this!
Post any questions you have in the Health and the Prozinc forums. (The lab #s would help, if you can post those as well.)

Welcome, you found the right place to help you & your kitty.

You can use the human glucose meter, they are much cheaper then the alphatrak meters. Most people are using the relion brand meters available at Walmart. The general consensus is the relion micro & confirm are the best but some also use the relion prime.

As the others have said, ask any questions you have. The only dumb question is the question you don't ask, that's what they told me when I started this sugar dance.

Some people like using a meter like their vet uses because the number system are different. Sorta like Farenhite and Centigrade. The strips for the AT are pricy so many of us here use the FreeStyle Light strips. They are made by the same company and the strips are identical. We buy them at Amazon. They can sometimes be slow being delivered, so order ahead.

Thank you for the tip about the FreeStyle strips! My decision to go with the AlphaTrak2 is definitely because it is what the vet recommends and uses and I want to be consistent (it will make it easier for me!) I also signed up for AmazonPrime monthly (for now) because the $11/mo is worth it to get anything I need in 2-days.

Good for you in being brave! You can do this and we can help. :)

Thank you to you, and everyone else for the warm welcome! It's making me feel so much better/confident that I can do this! I will see you around on the other boards. :) Thank you thank you!!

Adwdiabetes.com is the least expensive place I have found to buy alphatrak strips. And they always have $5 coupon codes... Comes to $48
