Hi,
I am Elzabeth and my 12 year old female cat, was Kanika diagnosed last November.
I am working with my vet to get her BG under control.
She's getting 2 units of Lantus Solostar 100 every 12 hours.
The BG went down but then went back up. One of the things the vet suspects is that the insulin got weaker after a month.
Has anybody dealt with this problem?

Thank you so much. I'm afraid I might have frozen it. I put it in an insulated bag with freezer pack when transporting it to the vet's office. Live and learn. Expensive mistake.

It could possibly be that she is bouncing when you see the numbers go back up. She’s been used to high numbers and when they start Togo lower it’s as if the body panicks at being lower than usual and bounces high again. It does level out. Two units is a very high starting dose and unfortunately often chosen. Y vets to start out on. I did the same and followed my vet advice until i came here and learned A LOT and changed to follow the protocol here

I follow this one:

My cat was off insulin very quickly following this protocol and was off for three years before losing his remission.

Welcome to the board! You've come to the right place :bighug:

Normally not, but if it did freeze indeed that could be a problem. Seconding what @Juliet says above about bouncing, particularly on 2ui.

You'll find many people experienced with Lantus in the insulin-specific forum: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/lantus-glargine-levemir-detemir.9/

Welcome!

As they said normally Lantus lasts a lot more, even with out refrigeration kept at room temperature it should last about a month, but if it got frozen that could have damaged it ,is it still clear?

Before you go throwing the insulin away if you testing at home if you are it would help to see the numbers you are getting, the insulin needs of a cat can change with times and maybe he just needs a dose adjustment

Hi Elizabeth,

I'm afraid I might have frozen it. I put it in an insulated bag with freezer pack when transporting it to the vet's office. Live and learn. Expensive mistake.
Frio pouches are great when you need to keep insulin cool outside the fridge, e.g. on trips to the vet's office. You just soak the pouch in water and the gradual evaporation of the water keeps the pouch contents cool. The pouches come in a range of styles and sizes. Here's an example:

I want to thank you all so much. I have been using the Tight Regulation protocol at my vet's direction. Kanika started with just a dose of 1 unit in November 2017 and we have gradually gone up to 3 units. We also transitioned her to eating Purina Pro Plan DM Savory Selects.
I'm hoping that all of this helps.

Hi, it would be helpful if you would create a signature telling about your kitty. I suggest you start a new thread in the Main Forum, so there are more eyes on your question, getting more response. Your posts were all on the introduction forum, perhaps not as many see that.

There are different forums, you are in Welcome to the Group. The Main Forum is just below the Welcome forum in The forums menu. The Post a new thread button is blue, located in the upper right corner.

A signature is information about your cat, look below my post here, see the smaller, gray lines beginning with Idjit. You can tell us name, diagnosis date, age, weight, what kind of insulin you use, what dosage, what kind of glucometer you use, what kind of food, where you are located, so a time zone can be established, for example. You can make a signature by clicking on your user name in right upper corner, select signature. It helps respondents to see info, without you having to constantly repeat, and can be edited at any time. :)

Find your user name in the upper right hand corner of this page. Select your name. A menu will appear, two columns. Left column, personal details on top, signature is right below. Click on that and type in the info.
