It's a old picture but easier to link atm as I already have it online.

Hello

My sister pointed me to the forums after we were told by a vet he believes one of our cats has diabetes(on Oct the 19th). We didn't have to money to do the blood test at the time but when we tested her blood surgery at home it was 68(today Oct 29th). With everything I've read I highly doubt that it is diabetes. I would like if anyone can point me in a way as to find out what is wrong with her or what maybe be best to get done. Tell a vet what to look for. Anything that maybe helpful.

She is very dehydrated, vet wouldn't let us leave without giving her fluids however shes still dehydrated.
She had a very high body temp but the vet didn't say what it was.
Shes been losing weight for the last 3 mounts and she was already to small before that. SEE MORE AT END OF POST
She seems to eat and drink normally. I however have up-ed her to a can of wet food a day. Used to give her half a can. We have 6 bowls of hard food out at all times.
She also has been going the bathroom out of the littler box A LOT (only pee). Last time she peed out side the box was right after we got her (about a year ago now) and she was in heat she stopped after being fixed. I don't see anything abnormal in the littler box.
Shes about 2 years old we got her about a year ago (when she was 1 year old).
Her mouth looks normal color. She dose however have a few missing small front teeth but the vet didn't think anything was wrong with her mouth.

She has always been a little wrong. My boyfriend swears she has some mental problems. She just always seems odd and doesn't even meow normally. She LOVES being with and on people 24/7 and hugs around you like a little monkey. We were told my the people we got her from (that rescued her) as a kitten she was not treated well and given stuff she shouldn't have. Stuff put in her eyes (some drugs) making her need meds to treat them. She does seem to see just fine tho.

High temperature could be a bacterial infection, possibly a bladder infection as she is urinating a lot.
Infection can elevate glucose, as can stress at the vet. Treating that may reduce the urination.

Feeding a canned or raw diet will provide more moisture and reduce dehydration. Add 1-2 tablespoons of water to the canned food to add more moisture to it. See Cat Info for good information on feline nutrition.

Excessive hunger, weight loss, and frequent urination can be hyperthyroidism. It is diagnosed with a blood test for thyroid hormones. It can be treated with an inexpensive medicine called tapazole, either as tablets, or compounded into a formula which may be rubbed inside the ear.

Think you
I asked the vet about a bladder infection and he just said no didn't even stop to think about it. Most likely diabetes is all he wold say. Needless to say i wasn't very happy with him.
He did however give some meds clavamox .5ml every 12 hour. Didn't tell me how long I should wait and see if she gets better or anything. Its been 10 days. She is still not as active as I think she should be but she did put on 1oz so I'm just not sure.

You mentioning ear reminded me her ears are very wet. No thick wax but very watery wax.
I also don't know how I forgot to add this but the last 4 or so days shes been trowing up at least 1 time a day.

I can ask about the hyperthyroidism sounds really rare in a 2 year old but also dose match a lot of her problems.

I think you need to discuss this further with a vet, especially if she is throwing up every day as she will be losing weight and becoming dehydrated.

As BJM said ideally you would give her wet food (switched slowly from dry) but if you are not then add water to her dry but don't leave it down for two long as you want to avoid the growth of moulds, bacteria on it.

When my cat was being sick a lot he lost alot of weight quickly and stopped moving about as he was in pain. It turned out he had pancreatitis and also an infection in his liver. The liver infection (cholangihepatitis ) improved when he was antibiotics but he had to have them for a couple of months but the pancreatitis took longer to resolve. However with pancreatitis cats usually feel nauseous and so do a lot of lip licking, walking away from food and you don't mention this. They also hid symptoms of pain and often sit in different positions in the house, they often sit in that meatloaf position and won't move often and you don't mention that.

I would ask about hypothyroidism (my vet ruled it out on how fast my cats heart was beating) and if you could afford to now ask the vet to do a routine blood panel. It may be cheaper in the long run than trying various meds that may or may not work.

Best wishes

Sarah

You may get vomiting from the Clavamox, too. Many antibiotics upset the GI tract. A probiotic, such as Forti Flora (which many cats love!) may help with the GI tract.

I suggest you get a 2nd opinion from another vet, asap.

And, see my signature link Vet Interview Topics, for questions to ask a prospective vet.

Think you both
I was thinking the meds maybe what made her throw up as she wasn't doing so till she had been on the meds for a few days. How long should I give the meds to try and work before seeing a vet again?
She dose get a can of cat food in the morning (all 4 cats do) they don't eat a full can so they get more of it at night. Before she started losing weight I was only giving 1/4 a can per cat then up-ed it to half when she was losing weight now for about the last week I've just put out a can each. Everyone stops easting there cans long before she does.
I'll start adding water to hers after I know what one shes going to eat as they switch around a few times. Like this morning she ate half her can and switched to or kittens can. The kitten, our 11lb female both only ate half a can if that. Our 11lb boy eats a little more then half a can. Do you think I should not let her eat so much at one time, could that be why shes throwing up to?

I also fond up today the throwing up maybe because of her eating a plant she shouldn't have. I had my dracaena in the bathroom for a few days to clean it and trim off dead leaves. I saw her biting at it this morning. I stayed up last night dealing with it so I can lock it away back in a room they don't get to go in.

I'd really like a different vets opinion on her but I'm thinking they may just say she needs more then 10 days of antibiotics before they would want to look at her again.

I should just ask this to make sure it most likely isn't diabetes with a reading of 68 right?

68 is a completely normal reading for a cat on a human meter. So I think you can safely rule of her being diabetic. (normal range is between 40-120)

You can add water to all your cats' food without a problem, in fact all 16 of mine are so use to it, that if I put it down now without it being watered down they look at me like I have 2 heads. Cats are desert animals by nature so they have a very low thirst drive, they are designed to get their moisture from their prey in the wild so adding water to their food is the best way to make sure everyone is getting enough fluids.

OK thank you
I believe my one girl wont like it with water but it really doesn't hurt to try. Shes a very picky girl and turns her nose to most can foods. Who know maybe she will like it better that way. I'll have to do that next time.
Can anyone tell me how long a open can of cat food can sit out and how long it can stay in the refrigerator before going bad?

I routinely leave the canned food out for roughly 12 hours.

Refrigerated, probably similar to raw meat - 3 days?

Mash up the food and water with a fork. That way, the water will be flavoured by the food. Adding extra water is very good for urinary tract health.
