Hello all! I'm Stef and I'm so glad to have found this community in such a stressful time.
My 12yo cat Garth had been experiencing symptoms (weight loss, tracking litter, increased thirst) for a few months that I didn't recognize as a real problem until recently. We thought his weight loss was because of the dog eating his food! He was diagnosed with diabetes and he has been on insulin for a few days.
I'm not so happy with my vet as he painted insulin treatment as a dark, daunting task and followed up with thinking about 'saying goodbye'. I understand he has to give those options but it felt insensitive as I've been a client since this cat was 6 weeks old. When I reached out to friends, they made me feel hopeful!
The vet tech recommended Royal Canin Glycobalance dry food only and encouraged us to stop the wet food asap. I haven't listened to her for a few reasons but mostly because I saw such a difference in his personality once I introduced the wet food. However, we are having a hard time giving up the dry food. He eats Merrick Senior Dry Food. I have been putting handfuls in a measuring cup for him because of the meowing just won't stop plus I found clear vomit yesterday AM and thought it might be from not eating. I do feel guilty for giving it to him and hope it's not countering the insulin. He goes back for his first glucose curve in 2 weeks but might try to change vets afterwards.
So thankful for this board!
