Bruno is around 10 years old and have been diagnosed in August. When he adopted us in the shelter 2 years ago, we were told that he has pancreatitis and was recommended to use Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet Salmon and pea variety as his main diet choice. He has been on the dry food version for 2 years we have given him a can or two of the wet version once a week as a treat.

We have been giving him Lantus(Glargine) for the past 7 weeks starting at 1 unit and gradually up to 5 units now and the result has been mixed. I have read and tried to understand all that I can all the articles in the education session on the front page and have read Dr. Pierson's recommendation in catinfor.org. In fact, Bruno has been on Dr. Pierson's diet for a little less than 2 weeks now. I followed Dr. Pierson's recipe exactly except that instead of making one big batch and freeze it for months, I make it twice a week to make sure he gets his food as fresh as possible.

Thank you for listening and I will move to the main health section for specific questions.

Welcome from Winnipeg, Manitoba. ;) The first few months after being diagnosed with feline diabetes are overwhelming and a steep learning curve. You are certainly in the right place for the support and information you will need to get Bruno on the right path and give you support as you learn the "ropes". As has already been mentioned the dose increases from 1 to 5 units in only 7 weeks is concerning. To get more feedback from more members please do post this on the Health forum at this link:

Also there is lots of information on Lantus in the yellow stickies at the top of the listings at this link:

Hello all,

I just spent 3 hours writing something and when I tried to post to the Main Health section, I got this. The post was quite long and maybe that's the problem. I will see if I can figure out how to contact an administrator after I start dinner. Have to keep everyone happy.

We started incrementing by 0.5 units every week. When there were no improvement after 3 weeks, our vet suggested incrementing by 1.0 unit every week. That's how we got to 5 units in week 7.

I found some surveys on how many units it take to get our kitties regulated but they were really old and not for Lantus. I have a feeling that 5 units might be quite high already.

I believe that there is a limit for new people (it's to keep spam at bay). It doesn't last long. Try posting in small amounts, waiting a few minutes between each post.
