Hello From Bones & Kara

Hello,

I just found out this week that my cat Bones has diabetes. Unfortunately, Bones has a type one diabetes. He will be on twice a day insulin injections for the rest of his life. I rescued Bones from the hill country this summer after his encounter with a snake. Bones has had four major surgeries and is well on his way to recovery from the bite. In fact, he should be tip top in another week or so with insulin treatments. Diabetic cats in need has been such a wonderful source of financial help and support. We have emptied our savings account and have gone into debt to keep Bones alive. I am hoping to get Bones back on his paws and find him a good home to take care of him. Currently, my husband and I work such odd hours that giving Bones his shots every day at the same time is impossible. If you know of anyone who would be willing to Foster Bones please let us know ASAP. Bones is almost a year old and is orange and white medium haired cat. He is up to date on all his shots and he has been neutered. Bones will lay beside you, snuggle, and follow you around. He is soooo sweet. I hope we can find him a good home. I've been is such a state since I found out about his diabetes. We love this cat and do not want to have to put him down... It's just too awful to think about.

Folks, this is a pic of the most adorable Bones.

DCIN sent Kara and her DH some Lantus and syringes for Bones. (The vet did script the Lantus.)

Kara, some questions folks would be asking you, so I will start:

What does Bones eat?

Will you be hometesting his BG levels?

How did the vet diagnose diabetes? If based on a single test, what was the BG value. If based on a fructosamine, what was that value.

Does Bones have any infections (oral, upper respiratory, urinary tract)?

Has Bones received any steroids, either shots, oral meds, transdermal meds, or ear drops?

Given your schedules, what kind of shot schedule will Bones be on?

Bones is now on Fancy Feast wet food
I will be home testing
It was based on a few test... but I'm not sure what the value was she wasn't very clear. She told me his level was very high, 500
Bones does not have an infection. He is on two antibiotics to prevent infection in his arm. His snake bite is healing slowly but very well. He is almost completely healed!
No steroids
I'm off this weekend so I will be working to get him leveled. My sister is a nurse and she will be working with us to get Bones back on his paws. Without her help this would not be possible. My sister won't be able to help for long so it is very important that we find Bones a good home.

Before you commit to finding a new home for your cat, why don't you hang in there for a couple weeks and try the protocol that the folks here suggest? I've read that many cats can go into remission with a diet change (high [>50%] protein, low [<10% carb ], with an appropriate dose of insulin - with many cats going into remission in weeks or months. I thought it was B.S. until I watched my cat go from a 600+ BG level with awful side effects, to becoming a cat who is a probable candidate for remission - - in just two weeks. Listen to what these folks have to say, read Dr. Lisa Pierson's site (catinfo.org) and try it out. It could surprise you.
