They want to know if I want to adopt him. Well of course I do - he's already stolen my heart. I was in bed last week with a miserable migraine and he slept at my feet the entire time. Just wish I knew his full history. I'd feel so much better if I knew he had an antibiotic shot or a reason why he started flooding the litter box. Nothing is on shelter file about anything else.

They think he's 3.5 years old. He was neutered in February/early march when he was turned into the shelter as a stray. He must have had a loving family. He's a good natured mellow kitty and goes with the flow. He hasn't had a drop of insulin since I picked him up mid July. He was a zombie at the shelter on 2u humilin twice a day - eating science diet kibble but not a lot.

Would temporary diabetes just happen in a young cat due to stress? Could he have had an infection that he fought off on his own?
Are the odds good that he will remain non insulin dependent? He was eating kibble at the shelter but on 100% low carb wet food here (except for raiding the dog's kibble when I forget to keep his wet food filled up). Or will he most likely eventually be diabetic again? Regardless, I won't be returning him. The only thing that scares me is I will have three cats ages 3 and 4 right now all aging at one time. How will my heart handle it.

All three of them are doing just amazing! They share the same space for the most part. Hef and Henry can get closer before Henry gets a bit uncomfortable. I wish I knew a secret for getting them to actually interact not just accept. But all three are comfortable. Victoria will his if one goes on one of her favourite things. You can see her ears down and then she goes into diva mode.

Here is a video without sound... of Hef taking away the mouse so Victoria can't play with it. He wasn't expecting Henry in the bedroom doorway or he would have taken it in there.

I am so happy for you and Hef. What a lucky boy that you found him.
I don't have answers for your medical questions however i just wanted to make a comment
about your age concern.
Max is a triplet, okay not identical, lol, but he and his sisters are littermates so I also have 3 at
the same age, whcih is going on 10.
And then of course I have the baby at a year old all ready.
I also worry about them getting sick at the same time and going at the same time and then Izzy will
be alone, but it is what it is.
You just have to love them.

Hi Karrie, the video of Hef with the mouse pole toy just cracks me up the way he walked off with it, so no one else could have it. It reminded me of Maggie with the mouse in her mouth when she drags it onto the bed in the middle of my sleep and plops it down. One day you might find it in bed and be expected to get up and play. I think we all knew it was a given Hef would be adopted by you the first week in your home. They are so adorable in the pic together. That's a good question about temporary diabetes and stress. It will be interesting to see what others say about it. Very lucky kitties to have you as their Bean and DH, too!

He's precious and they look like they tolerate each other pretty well for only being together a short time.

I don't have enough experience with the disease to answer your questions, but I'm happy he's doing so well and that he has found his furever home. All three of them are lucky to have found you.

When I adopted George, I adopted another kitten, Gracie, at the same time. At about 12yo, Gracie died suddenly. I had George for another 8+ years. You just never know what will happen or how long you will have. It's no different with any creature -- 4-legged or 2-legged.

Karrie -- I do think stress or a transient infection that clears could have caused the initial FD. The infection cleared and diet was changed and you have a happy cat. Do what your heart tells you to do.

(((Karrie))): your house is filled with kitty love again!! Don't worry about their ages. Your heart is so big that all the love they will give you in the many years to come will ease the worries you feel now.

They are gorgeous and I am so glad you are keeping Hef (I thought you were going to call him Harley...am I behind?!!!). The pics are great and the video is adorable....that is so darling how he grabs the mouse and almost flaunts it in front of Victoria before he walks off.

These are three lucky ones...yes they are. BTW, your help to Violet has been amazing and incredible. You have gone the extra step. Thank you from my heart and I know that Violet will be forever grateful to your calm approach and informative posts.

what a great update - Hef is gorgeous, and looks like he really fits in with everyone. What a great kitty. I love the story of ho e he stayed on your feet - wonderful! I am so glad that you will keep him. YAY!!

I know on kitties being the same age, and aging up together. It is that was here too, and I do worry about it. Bj is a bit older, but Mannie and Elsa are 14 and 15. Bj is 18. We just deal with whatever arises as it comes... I tend to agree with Sienne on the FD side of it. I am ever so grateful that you rescued him for the shelter. I am sure he is too.

The photos are great, loved the video!  :-D :-D

that's so cute! MY TOY!

fwiw, we found a litter of kittens in a box in the attic of the garage to the house we were renting some 16-17 years ago. the momma was there too but took off soon after the kittens outgrew her  . after forcing them on raul for months he agreed that i could keep all 5 of the babies. that's how we got Gizmo, Spazzie, LePew, Psycho, and Sweetie. We lost Gizmo at about age 8 to VAS, Spazzie at about age 14+ to lymphoma just a couple years ago and we still have LePew, Psycho, and Sweetie who are approaching 17 years old very quickly.

so while yes as they age you can lose several in a short amount of time, it doesn't always work out that way either. and no matter how many years they are on this earth with us, most important is that they had nothing but good years because you gave them a warm welcoming and loving home

Hi Karrie,
I echo everything said here. Your 3 kitties are very lucky to have such a wonderful home. They are loved and that is what matters. Just keep on doing what you're doing. Maverick is smiling down on you all.
Love the pics and the video.

my vet (who i know doesn't know much about FD) said that it's been well established that a stressed out cat's pancreas can shut down and with support it will start working again - the outcoming being a temporary diabetes. we thought punkin's diabetes was from the house remodel that we started. i don't know if it was just a coincidence or not because of the acro, but he went straight downhill in the first 5 days of the house remodel - they gutted our kitchen and master bathroom and it couldn't have been noisier. i had the cats in our daylight basement so they were as protected as they could be, but punkin reacted terribly to it.

there are no crystal balls for the future for any of our kitties - just enjoy them while you have them.

heehee and love the videos and pictures.

You guys are the best. Thank you for the feedback on owning three at similar ages. It has been weighing on my mind and had a fear factor for me. All three of them are wonderful. I do feel kind of guilty that I don't have a deep bond with them like I did with Maverick but I love them and would never give them up. They make me smile every day. Victoria loves sleeping on my lap (picture below) and drools when she gets petted. Henry has been trained to audibly meow so he can go for walks outside and get access to his food room. Its such a soft squeeky sissy meow. Hefner sleeps on the bed and talks so sweetly. I can't fathom that their previous humans didn't search the shelter for them at all, and that Victoria was adopted once and returned. She has a beautiful spirit. And how long Henry and Victoria were in the shelter for instead of a loving home. I can't believe I have THREE cats but I will do the best I can for all three of them.

Oh and I had decided to change his name to Harper. I decided to wait to rename him unless I decided to keep him. Kick me for that one. Crazy me thinking that. So now the name has stuck. I don't call him Hefner, I call him Heff, of Heffie. I had decided on the name Harper but I don't think that suits him now that he's mine. The name Hefner has lost its icky lounge lizardy feel when I write it now though. I used to cringe typing it. But no ick factor anymore LOL.

love the pics and video.....

don't put too much effort on age...it's just a number....and you will know what to do when/if they get sick....you are a loving bean and all 3 with Nike love you for it...you are providing a safe loving secure home for all 4.....you are doing an amazing job and so is Patrick!.....

for now...love them and enjoy them....it's the legacy that Maverick left you! he knew you had it in you to care for others in need....he knew that!

Such a great update, and LOVE the video! Sometimes the deep bond takes a while. Trixie came into our lives when she was 3; we rescued her from an ugly situation. I always loved her, but admittedly I didn't feel "the bond" right away, either. Now, she owns a huge chunk of my heart...coudn't imagine my world without her.

I also totally understand how you feel about the age thing...5 of mine are the same age (3 are from the same litter!!! couldn't make a decision). Since there's nothing I can do to change that, I just love 'em as much as I can each and every day...it's worth every second.
