I thought Sadie might be Diabetic because of weight loss. But not so and also not Thyroid issue.
Losing weight fast.

Greetings everyone & Happy Holidays
Any advice on the following?
My cat Sadie ( 13 yo Calico) has been suffering with allergy like symptoms for the last ten years. Recent test say it is Psuedomonas Aeruginosa. Over the years we have tried every AB there is, that is if I can get her to take it. Early on Zeniquin worked, but no longer.

I have tried years of Pred off and on, but she picks it's tase in the food and she wont eat either. So, it is hit or miss. The only thing that works to some extent is the ol one two punch of Depo/Convenia. It seems like the Convenia works better than the Depo. At present she has stopped eating because she feels awful due to the heavy congestion in her head. It has never been in her chest. She is back shooting “Snot Rockets”. Sorry to be so descriptive, but it is what it is.
Thank you

Have you had an ultrasound done. Simon was recently doing the same thing. I found out that he may have IBD and is not absorbing nutrients properly. He is on a hydrolyzed protein diet and even though he has not gained much weight at least the weight loss has stopped

I agree with Lisa and I'd also suggest having the vet rule out exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.

As for the congestions, how about putting your cat in the bathroom with a hot shower running to have the steam help break up the congestion?

I will look into IBD as a factor. Not sure if Vet considered that so I will ask.

An unfamiliar term I will investagate.
Last night I took her in to the Vet and they gave her Convenia and Dex shots. She ia much better today and back to eating enthusiastically. I may start her on Mirtazipine to bulk up some of the weight she lost. I am hoping it was just due to feeling lousy. It is hard to eat and not be able to breath out of the nose.

You can get prednisolone compounded into flavoured chew treats, much easier to give.

As far as the losing weight fast, I third the suggestion of an ultrasound. I could be either IBD or small cell lymphoma, or something else wrong in the GI system. A GI blood panel might help, and is what is used to test for EPI.

I’ve had two cats with stubborn, “snorkely” head congestion over the years. Sometimes the congestion would get a bit better with antibiotics but never fully go away. I also tried l-lysine with limited results.

At a certain point it comes down to figuring out the source of the problem rather than treating symptoms.

For Charlie, the vet school finally did a flush of the nasal cavities, cultured the discharge, and prescribed a nose drop (it was actually an eye drop that could be used nasally). That finally knocked things down to near normal after years of battling.

The other cat had long-term issues as well. She was ancient when I lost her (probably 20+ years old) with poor teeth, but wasn’t a good candidate for anesthesia. We now believe she might have had a tooth rupture into the nasal passages at some point. Hard to say for certain, but worth checking the teeth just in case (something my vets didn’t think of until too late).

Thank you!
Was the nose (eye drop) given just once or several times a day. Did the flushing cause a slow down of the sneazing?
Please post the name and dosage info on the eyedrop as it may be her only hope of relief.

Thank you ALL for your insightful information.
Happy New Year everyone !

Stating the obvious here but just like in humans there's a valid reason you see an ear/nose/throat specialist. Worst case would be an abscessed upper tooth spreading to the brain. All those systems being packed into a tiny skull could lead to something I'm not qualified to speculate on.
Andy once had runny eyes, snot rockets etc on and off for years. Finally a second vet did the dye in the eyes/ let's see where it comes out and sure enough out his plugged nose came the dye. I forget the cure but that was the very last time it happened.
More stating the obvious. A cat won't eat what it can't smell. Maybe this is why she won't eat.
