I was boarding my diabetic cat for a few days at a cat specific boarding place. My husband dropped her off on Thursday July 25. We called to check up on her July 27th and they said she was doing great. She was purring, being playful, etc. They said she wasn’t eating her softfood but she was eating dryfood and treats. She used to be one of those dry addicts and for the most part, I broke her of that habit. On Monday, July 29th, my husband got a call from them saying she wasn’t eating or drinking water, she appeared to be gazed/out of it and she wasn’t going to the bathroom. My husband called me to let me know what was going on so I called them back. When I was on the phone, they told me that they took her home with them the night before to see if they could get her to eat and then they told me she only went to the bathroom the first day she was there. I tried getting them to take her to an emergency care clinic but they said we would have to have someone get her from them and take her there but they would take her to the vet that was 10 minutes away. So we had them take her to that vet. When I asked for the number to the vet they were taking her to, they were caught off guard and acted like I didn’t need it. But they gave it to me once I told them that I would need it so I could call to provide them with my credit card number. When I was on the phone with them, my cat had already been dropped off and they told me that the boarding place didn’t give much information except for that the fact that she was drinking a lot, not eating at all and she was peeing a lot (obviously what they didn’t tell me). I told the vet what I was told and then I said I thought it might be a hypo episode because they said that they had given her insulin that morning and she wasn’t eating (they had told me previously that they don’t shoot insulin if the cat doesn’t eat).
Anyway, it turned out it wasn’t a hypo episode, she was hyperglycemic. The vet suggested that an emergency clinic take over so she could be monitored over night, which I agreed and I had told them that’s what I had wanted in the first place because I had a feeling she was going to need that. And the kicker is the place they recommended was the very place I tried to get the boarding place to take her to. The boarding place called my husband and asked if they were picking her up at the vet, he said no because she was going to the emergency clinic. I could hear them getting defensive over the phone—they kept repeating….”you know we did everything we could, you know we did the right thing.” They also asked why we were taking there and he told them because that’s what I wanted and they responded that place is expensive but it’s your money.
My best friend and the vet coordinated to get her to the emergency vet clinic. She ended up being diagnosed as having DKA. They told me the cost and I told them to do whatever it took. She continued to get worse and they determined on Tuesday, July 30th, she also had undiagnosed heart disease which was making it almost impossible for them to treat her DKA since the treatment contradicted the treatment for heart disease. They said as they treated her DKA it made her heart disease show itself. It killed me to do it, but I had her put down because they said it was getting harder and harder for her to breath and they told me they didn’t think she was going to make it through the day.
I'm pissed off that the boarding place waited to tell us of a problem that was apparently ongoing during her stay there. Now, i'm left wondering if we could have saved her if we would have found out sooner. I mean, if they thought there was enough of a problem to take her home with them, wouldn't that constitute enough of a problem to notify me? 12 hrs can make a life and death difference with a diabetic cat. This whole situation with them feels very sketchy.
