Having a problem getting syringes in NY - any advice?

Hi!

I've been ordering Molly's syringes from Hocks for a million years. Today I placed an order and was told I need an Rx since I live in the state of New York (they have never needed one before). My vet has not seen Molly in YEARS because they do not support testing and fortunately, thanks to everything I have learned here, we are able to manage her needs without the help of a vet. I just called the vet's office and was told by the receptionist that she'll talk to the vet but he most likely will not write a script since he hasn't seen Molly is so long.

Anyone else encounter the same problem? Any advice? In New York I can purchase 10 syringes at a time with a script. Thanks so much, Michele (and Molly too of course).

I'm sorry I can't help, but I wonder if it's worth editing or altering your subject line to include something like 'problem buying syringes, New York' to attract the attention of folks who may be able to help you. :smile:
 
Ok so I just purchased 6 boxes of 100 syringes from Hocks (Kentucky) and am having them shipped to my mother-in-law in Florida so she can mail them here to me in NY. There has got to be a better way!

Still upset about my vet. I am expected to bring in a perfectly healthy cat (diabetes excluded) just so they can charge me for a visit to write a script? Molly HATES the vet's office (who's cat dosnt!) so why would I subject her to that? And the fact that they don't support testing. Ugh, I need a new vet!!

Yep, you could always move in with your mother-in-law, Michele...? ;-) :lol:
 
Many people here order their insulin syringes from AmericanDiabetesWholesale.com Use the blue ADW ad link at the top of the FDMB boards to make your purchase so that FDMB get a commission which will go towards the cost of maintaing this great board :-D ADW has all the major brands of insulin syringes: Monoject, BD, UltiCare, SureComfort, etc. I'm sure they will have the particular insulin syringes you need for your cat :smile:
 
Please take this in the manner it is meant, and that is this thread is coming from the heart.

I completely understand your frustration with the laws of New York, but maybe, just maybe, this is fate's way of getting your kitty into the vet for a much needed checkup.

I also understand your reluctance to use your previous vet, and I fully agree with you. However, not all vets have the same view of home testing (I have dealt with three different vets in my area, and none of them argued with me about home testing). So, please do ask your friends for referrals (and/or do an internet search). Then, pose the question of home testing before making an appointment.

Truly, your kitty should have check ups and labs done at the very least every two years (preferably annually), regardless of the diabetes. So many other issues can happen with our beloved babies, and if you catch it in time, there is much you can do.

My kitty had annual exams. However, she dislocated her knee, and during the pre-surgery labs, they detected early CKD (kidney disease) that was not showing on her previous labs just six months prior. Because of the knee, we were able to save our cat's life, because if I had waited another 6 months for her annual, her kidney disease might have been too far gone by then (this occurred 16 months ago).

Unfortunately, two months ago, she was diagnosed with diabetes. Had I not been getting labs every 4 months due to her CKD, Lord only knows how long she would have been suffering from the diabetes (the excessive thirst has always been a symptom of the CKD, so I had no idea).

So, there you have it.

These are very wise words. And actually you've reminded me that, apart from Bertie (my diabetic), none of my cats have had a check-up for a while...

So...maybe your posting on this thread is fate's way of getting me (and maybe some others too...) to get their cats checked out......? With life being so busy, it's something we can easily forget. So, thanks for that reminder!

600 should last you while...but whenever looking for more, I can tell you that you can get U100 syringes from Walmart in PA pretty durn cheap...I just bought 3 boxes of 100, no questions asked.

Don't know if that will help...but I know I was surprised, as I had been ordering U40s online (switched from ProZinc to Lantus).

I live in NY state and get my syringes at Walmart--They're only $12 for a box of 100. The law is kind of weird: The pharmacy can choose whether or not to require a prescription for syringes. If the pharmacy does sell syringes without a prescription, it can only dispense 10 syringes at a time, and it cannot give them to anyone under 18 years old. Basically, yes, you need a script from your vet to avoid any issues.

However, diabetic and/or older cats should be seeing the vet for a regular check up at least once a year, and preferably twice a year, so I would strongly recommend finding a new vet that you like and scheduling regular check-ups, and annual blood panels if your cat is a senior. I am sure there is a good vet in Long Island somewhere. Perhaps you could Google Long Island Veterinarians, and start calling a few, asking what insulins they recommend and if they support home testing?

I guess I should bring Molly (and the others) in for a check up, I just tend to get caught up in the 'they're healthy now' and 'they are so traumatized by the car and the vet visit' way of thinking.

Yes, I definitely need a new vet, that's for sure. I really want the mom and pop vet, not the 'group' vet that has such a high turn over that every time we go, we see a different doc. Having to say "this is Molly, she's diabetic" every time is not okay.

fwiw, isn't Roni of Roni and Moonie on Long Island? I think she's got a good vet if i remember correctly. Maybe send her a pm? she has a lot on her plate lately because of Hurricane Sandy and Moonie being sick so maybe give her some days to get back to you. a couple members talk to her via phone I believe so maybe they could even find out for you the next time they talk to her. i'm trying to remember who it was, maybe Barbara and Tuffy? but if you go back thru lantus isg they were posting updates right after the hurricane went thru
