Hi everyone,
I’ve had a very long day and I want to reach out to see if anyone has had anything similar happen? I have not yet had time to update Lucifer’s signature and info but he is starting his Glargine tomorrow. However, today when he woke up he was very strange. He had a twisty look on his mouth slumped to one side and was very out of it except for his paw raising up and down. It seemed seizure like to me.

He went straight to the vet. All his panels came back good. Electrolytes we’re good. Sugar was 483. Other than elevated sugar everything on paper was fine. No urinary problems and no ketones. They kept him a few hours and gave him an anti epileptic.

I brought him home he was out of it from meds but seemed to still be having strange behavior. I took him to emergency vet. They ran more tests all were good. They say it may have to do with diabetes but are saying that 483 would not cause it? He was sent home with seizure meds. He took them and now he is super tired which is a side effect. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I’m at a loss. I finally have his insulin and new food and spent $700 in testing today to feel helpless and like I know nothing more than I did yesterday.

I am so sorry you have had to deal with this. It must have been really scary.
That’s good the ketones were absent! And all the other test were OK.
How does he seem now? Can he walk ok? And is he responding to you?
I think it would be unlikely that it is to do with the diabetes.
Did they think it could have been a stroke?

I am going to ask @Bandit's Mom to help you with the spreadsheet as I think you have a lot on your plate at the moment.
What dose of glargine is he starting on tomorrow.?
What food are you feeding him?

Unfortunately there are a number of possible causes...I assume they did the standard bloodwork to look at kidneys, liver, and hematology. Then there's things like toxins, or allergic reaction to a new med or something. FIV, FIP, FeLV. Head trauma if he fell? Stroke?

Unlikely it's from the diabetes. In high numbers we see neuropathy or DKA, I've not heard of seizures when DKA has been ruled out

Hi Ashley, welcome to FDMB! Gosh, it must have been really scary to see him have a seizure.
Is he already on a low carb canned food? When there are no ketones, we suggest trying a food change before starting insulin.

I can help you with setting up a spreadsheet. Will only take me a minute to set one up.

Thank you so much for your help and all your kind words. I’m finally settling a bit. We were up with him all of last night and the night before. All of his panels are beautiful they say. No liver issues, no toxins, no pancreas issues. So we’re at the point of not knowing what brought them on. They said we may just have terrible luck where he has developed unrelated epilepsy as well. We don’t know his actual age.

The emergency vet has put him on Gabapentin and Zonisamide every 12 hours. As of 2am he stopped seizing and has been himself. He does this thing where if your not petting him (I work from home) he hits you until you do and he hasn’t for days. This morning he jumped up on the couch and hit me and I was so happy lol.

He had his low carb high protein wet food this am and then 3 units of Glargine (Basaglar) his first dose. He is much more himself and is all curled up with me. Praying he remains stable and we can get him regulated.
