Has anyone used D-mannose for UTI's? Options for idiopathic UTI's UPDATE

Wishing everyone a nice Sunday.

I will like to ask if anyone has used D-mannose for UTI's? is it safe for using in our DB kitties?

If not has anyone used something else to help with UIT's, specially idiopathic non bacteria ones

I have used d-mannose for Squallie for some time now. He used to get almost chronic idiopathic urinary issues, and obviously antibiotics didn't really do any good. Since I started the d-mannose he has not had a single one. He gets a very low dose (about 1/16 of a tsp) mixed in with his food twice daily. He also gets extra water added to his food, too. I have recently started giving it to one of my civvies as I suspected he might have been having some problems and if he was, they have resolved since starting the d-mannose. It must have some natural sugars in it as it can be sticky and it has a mildly sweet taste (which all my vats apparently love), but it has never raised Squallie's BG. I get the Now brand from Amazon, and one bottle lasts me quite a while.

ETA: Pretty sure Jayla @jayla-n-Drevon uses it, too.

Thanks that's pretty much what's happening with Babu, he's having urinary issues but culture cames negative still he has traces of blood in his urine not visible it only shows in the dipsticks and in the culture and some more severe crisis where he is noticeable in pain ( we had one last week), nothing showed in the x-ray or the ultrasound, this is not new to him he had several episodes like this when he was very young ( from 9 months old till around his 4th year), but we had had a few years without any problem but now it's back.

It scares me a little to use d-manose since I read is actually a simple sugar although it appears not to be absorbed by the digestive tract (not sure how that works) and I wouldn't want to do anything that may get Babu out of remission

I wish I could give you a guarantee that it won't put him out of remission, but I can't. All I can say is that it has never affected Squallie's blood sugar, and he is extremely carb-sensitive. Since starting the d-mannose, he has had several dose reductions, and I attribute a good bit of that to his not having UT issues anymore. My understanding of it is that, although it is a simple sugar, it is not well metabolized by the body and most of it it washed away in the urine. Bacteria in the bladder attach to it and are flushed out, which is why it is helpful in treating urinary issues. If you decide to try it, please let us know how it goes! :bighug:

Hi everyone, this is an update, end of september Babu's urinalysis and culture came positive with e-coli but no symptoms were showing so I talked to the vet I started him on D-mannose and crossed fingers (and lots of praying) without giving him any more antibiotics ( he had had a lot of them lately ), he got it for a month and we just got the results of a new urinalysis and he's clear!!! no bacteria :) and no effect whatsoever showed in his BG numbers

I think I'm going to follow squalliesmom example now and reduce his dose but continue giving it to him at least until another culture comes clean

Squallie gets a small, daily maintenance dose twice a day with his food. It really works for him! Glad it helped Babu!!!:):):)

Yes it is diabetic friendly and it works with no bad side effects-we have used it in shelters for years and I have used it for Dre and myself... I love this product-has the teeniest bit of sweet taste so easy to hide :)
I have heard too much can cause loose stool but I have never encountered that.

I've never had an issue with it, either. And don't be discouraged by the sweetness, yes it's sugar but not a type that will raise BG. :)
