I'm highly considering trying holistic remedies for pain for Blackie. I'm considering getting something called Creak-Away from Jackson Galaxy's website (host of "My Cat From Hell" on Animal Planet, Saturday nights at 8:00 CST) to see if it'll work for her pain. The cost of modern medicine these days is way too much for us right now. Our vet prescribed Tramadol topical, but that's way out of our budget, and I know that there are others that have suggested trying Adequan, which is still too pricey.

If anyone has ever tried anything like this, or even similar, and has some, or a lot of success, please feel to chime in here. Thank you. :-D

What kind of pain? It can make a difference in what you choose to do.

Arthritis may respond to fish oil, not as a pain reliever, but by reducing inflammation.

I agree with BJ.
And in fact I give all my old kitties krill oil every day now because of the many health-giving properties of omega 3's.
It can take a little while to see improvement from these omega 3 supplements. But all my oldies seem more mobile now (and, incidentally, have supersoft fur!) If you search online you'll find that studies (on humans) have shown that a reduction in pain meds was achievable as a result of omega 3 supplementation.

Fish oils also have blood thinning properties. This can be a good thing in helping to prevent blood clots. But it also means that it may not be suitable if other blood-thinning meds are being taken.

I also give my kitties a small amount of vitamin E (advisable when giving fish oils to kitties).

Well, if you give krill oil rather than fish oil you may not need to supplement vitamin E... Krill oil naturally contains anti-oxidants, including vitamin E. Fish oil doesn't contain vitamin E and so it needs to be supplemented. (And neither does Vit E have to be given every day; it's a vitamin that's stored in the body.)

I started out giving fish oil and also gave vitamin E. Then I switched to krill oil (currently using Mercola krill oil for pets). I still give a teensy amount of vitamin E because I can't quite shake the habit, but in fact this may not be necessary with krill oil....

There is quite a bit on the good old internet about all this if you feel up to a bit of reading...
