Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this:

When administering insulin this morning there was a pronounced resistance against the plunger. The insulin went in ok and my cat didn't show any kind of painful reaction, but I was wondering if this was a bad spot to administer. Location was the shoulder region at the shoulder blade.

Thanks!

C.

It does sound like the point of the needle ran into something. Do you tent the skin and shoot just under the layer of fat?

Yep, I tented and shot right under the skin. Usually goes in without a problem. It almost felt like I was pushing into cartilage or something....

It may help, before filling the syringe, to move the plunger in and out several times. It may help distribute the syringe lubricant as well as break any seal.

I don't know what brand of syringes you are using, but this is what I have found:

WALMART and WALGREEN as well as the pricier BD BRAND were very hard for me to use. They seem to have a lot of resistance.....not just during administration but in preparing the insulin too. very sticky and hard to move. I hated them all.

Then I was lucky enough to luck out and buy some Terumo syringes (CVS brand) and they are GREAT. very very slick and smooth......you can get that perfect amount in the syringe without any resistance at all.

however, some may even say too slick....be careful to keep your hands of the plunger until it is inserted!

bjm is correct about the lube....that will help a lot

good luck!
