8/5/2015 - First insulin injection
8/5/2018 - Leo is healthy, regulated, and just got his 2,190th insulin injection

If you are new to diabetes, FDMB is the right place, and you can make your kitteh healthier like I did.

In 2015, Leo was washed out, hungry, thin, and peeing a lot. He had neuropathy. He was diagnosed with Feline Diabetes Melitis. The diagnosis was scary and devastating to us.:(

I knew nothing about feline diabetes in 2015.
  • Our great cat veterinarian helped us.
  • I had amazing help on FDMB from a bunch of people who gave up their free time to guide me and encourage me.:bighug::bighug::bighug:
Feline diabetes can be very challenging to deal with. Theresa and I have successfully treated Leo for 3 years now. What does it take?
  • dedication and lots of learning
  • patience and kitteh love
  • losing some sleep
  • permanent low carb food change (Fancy Feast Classics)
  • money for the vet and supplies
  • ~5,500 test strips (365 x 5/day x 3 years)
  • $500/year insulin (for 2018), many kittehs don't use this much
  • ~2,200 syringes (365 x twice/day x 3 years)
If you laid out those 4" syringes end-to-end, they would be 733 feet long, more than 2 American football fields in length.:eek:

Today, we continue Leoberry's diabetes treatment. And we treat him for small cell lymphoma as well. In return, we have a healthy, happy kitteh Leo. And some great friendships on FDMB. Who could ask for more?:joyful::bighug:

What a cute picture of China. Thanks everyone for the best wishes. This place is great.

All of us are lucky to have FDMB as a resource. Also we benefit from very, very modern medicine. Even home testing kits were not generally available until the mid 1990s.
 
You forgot something on your list Jeff. The basic respect for life that drove you and Theresa to not just give up when so many other people would not put up with the bother. I'm sure we've all seen the look, "You have a diabetic cat? Maybe it's time to....". To what? Tell the cat you love him, just not that much.
You're a very lucky boy Leo. Hi Theresa, we all know you're there too. :)
