I noticed Missy hadn't had a bowel movement in a couple of days. I decided to try some canned pumpkin to see if that would get things moving. About 30 to 45 minutes later, I heard her in the litter box. She was scratching around, and then I heard this pitiful little meow. I decided to go ahead and take her in to the vet. They just called and said she has an impaction. They are going to give her an enema to clear her out. Poor baby.

I have a feeling the vet is going to push for me to change Missy to the prescription food because of the added fiber. I've told her before that I'm not going to change her, but I bet she brings it up again. We just cannot get on the same page when it comes to food. Do you think adding a little bit of pumpkin daily will prevent constipation?

On the plus side, she's at 96 at +4. It'll be nice to show the vet that I'm starting to figure out this whole diabetes thing. I'll be sure to mention all the amazing advise and support I've received from this board.

Impacted anal sacs.

They expressed them and gave her an enema, so she's all cleared out now. Poor baby! I would say she feels better, but she didn't seem like she felt bad before. Right before we left for the vet, she was running around, swatting a ball around the floor. I haven't seen her do that since ... I don't think I've ever seen her do that. But, luckily now I now that she's taken care of now.

oooooo, good catch.

one of my civies had an abscessed anal gland that ruptured last year. cost me about $700 or $800 if i remember correctly. before that i never really knew to even look too much at their booties. now i do.

Yeah, I was going to wait until tomorrow to give the pumpkin a chance to work. But once I head that poor little meow from the litter box, it broke my heart and I couldn't make her wait anymore. Of course, she was not happy to get into the carrier, but hopefully she understands the trip was worth it.

Lactulose or Miralax to keep things regular [I'm partial to lactulose]. And one can give their own enemas if necessary. Just don't use the human solution. But you can empty and refill the Fleet baby enema bottles and use them. Anitira Frazier in her book The New Natural Cat give a pretty good how to.

Fiber is not the best for motility like in humans. Actually fiber is often recommended for diarrhea in cats. So ask for Lactulose or go get going with Miralax OTC. Cats don't need fiber.

It's been a while since I used Miralax. This page says 1/-8 to 1/2 teaspoon twice per day:
http://www.helium.com/items/679556-how- ... on-in-cats

Basically you give just enough to keep things regular at about once per day and the poop so that it is not too hard and not too soft. However H had the right consistency poop and was only going once every other day [on lactulose]. You just want to avoid things getting impacted again.

Adding a little water to the wet food can help too. It should not be soupy but it can be a little more 'wet.' Constipation is sometimes thought to be influenced by hydration.

My FIV Thomas is impacted quite often. He takes lactulouse 2x a day. He can take it because he is not diabetic has sugar.
Or you could use miralax but I don't know what the dosage is for cats.

FYI lactulose does not have "sugar" or at least in any form that effects diabetics/insulin etc. Many here use lactulose here just fine with their diabetic kitties. And it is particularly helpful for the diabetic kitties with appetite problems because it is easier to make sure they get their full dose with.

Sorry to pounce, "sugar" can be like a nuclear word here.
