Hello everyone, I hope everyone & every cats are well.

Gumung was OTJ since July 2022.
I noticed he was drinking quite a lot today and I tested his BG and it said 538. I almost had a heart attack. His BG was around 120s and this really shocked me.

If this kind of jump in BG while cat was out of insulin, do you go back with dose/?

Hope to hear from someone soon..

Thank you

Hi Erin :) That's so scary. I can't offer any advice but I def sympathise with the heart attack. So good that you're here. I'm sure you'll get plenty of support :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Are you seeing any symptoms of him being unwell? When is the last time his teeth were checked? Dental issues are one of the most common reasons for a cat to fall out of remission.

Hello Bhooma! Yes, his teeth cleaning with tech is scheduled next week already. This was scheduled around two weeks ago when I saw his BGs in 120. But they are not vets but tartar & plaque removal specialist. So now, I am not sure if his cleaning could be done without vets & with high BGs. There were no sign of him being unwell, just that drinking habit was spotted just now. That’s why I am just so shocked.

His teeth might need more than cleaning. You might want to get a vet to examine his teeth and see if there are any major issues that need extractions etc

Keep testing his BG over the next couple of days to see if it comes down. Do you still have Lantus that is good for use?

I see. So I do have to think about going into vets soon. Yes, I still have unused 3 new pens in the fridge. Do you think I should start on his insulin?

Why not see what his BG looks like today and then start insulin from tomorrow?

Yes, I can do that. I can try to monitor his BGs all day today to see if there it’s coming down. Un-opened insulins can be used if it was kept cold right?

Thank you Bhooma, yes, they are not expired until 4/24/2024. If it is same as today, what dose do you think I should start? His dental cleaning appointment is on Monday next week. That dental cleaning is necessary for Gumung anyway and would like to see if his BGs benefits from the cleaning.

You could start with 0.5U. You can always go up after 3-5 days if the starting dose is too low.

Thank you Bhooma for your suggestion. I haven’t found a good vet near me after moving down to FL. That being said, I trust this forum than any vet right now. :cat: Thank you again for giving some answers to this outrageous BG number. I did freaked out a bit to see that number again.

Hello again Erin. Sorry to hear you are stopping by because GuMung is in high numbers. Could you update his spreadsheet to include a 2023 tab? We'll be able to help you decide what to do with his insulin, if needed. Though I suspect with a number in the 500's, it's more than just stress.

If he does need a dental, more than just cleaning, you'll need to go to a vet that does dental xrays. A couple times Neko had trouble brewing below the gum line that was not able to be seen by visible inspection even by the dental specialist vet.

A 0.5 unit dose may not be a good starting point, given that he got up to 6 units last time, before turning it around. How much does GuMung weigh now?

Hello Wendy, its nice talking to you again.

And thank you for your suggestion to visit vet with x-ray. I will be taking him to the dental cleaning specialist on Monday next week and see if he has more serious damages to his dental. Hopefully he doesn’t have any serious problem. He doesn’t seems to drool & and has high appetite & playful . One exception of drinking habit is back when he had high BGs. His weight is approximately 15~ 16lb.

Starting Lantus dose is 0.25 units per kg of cat. GuMung is 6.8-7.2 kg, which would mean a starting dose of 1.5 units. If he needs to go back on insulin, you want to try to get him regulated as soon as possible, to help him getting into remission a second time.

Nice to see his numbers are coming down today, though still high. Any chance he got into something high carb the last couple days? It's odd that he's so much higher than just a couple days ago.

Thats my goal now. Just get him on control as soon as possible. And yes, that’s why I was kind of freaking out since few days ago, his number was 120. And today being 500s, so shocking. I will be home and can be monitor his BGs for every 3~4 hours so yes, maybe I should go with higher dose according to his weight being approximately 7kg.

He might have been stealing some dry food from his sister, but usually they are in other room and the other cat always eats ALL of her dry food.. maybe some crumbs?
