Tia's Mom

Member Since 2016
Is there a number where you would not shot below? My Tia is at 8.5 empty stomach before evening feed. My vet says do not shoot if she is in the 8's. She is presently on Caninsulin, 1 unit every 12 hours. Although I cut back the amount based on her numbers. Her BG curves have shown us she drops dramatically 2 hours after her injection, down into the 3's. She has been registering numbers between 10.5 to low 8's consistently at the twelve hour mark.

Any thoughts.

Can you tell us what meter you are using? From your other posts you have switched her from dry food to wet. Correct? How long has she been on the 1 unit dose and when did you switch her food? An early drop can indicate too big a dose - do you have any more numbers, if possible can you set up a spreadsheet and update your signature so you don't get the same questions over and over. The 3s are a concern, especially so early in the cycle.

I am using an Alpha Trak metre. I have not been able to set up a spreadsheet yet, although I have done two curves on her.
I worry because she has gone up to 48 hours without her numbers rising into the 9's.
I don't want to do anything to hamper her going into remission.

I will update my signature and work on a shareable spreadsheet.
Thank you

Can you give the numbers for both her curves please with the dose and type of food at the time - thanks.

I hope this is okay.
She was eating Fancy Feast pate.

Below 3.8 on the alphatrak is heading into hypo territory, which is where you don't want to be. You should be aiming for a lowest point around 5-6 hours after you give the insulin. If you look at Cappuccino's spreadsheet she had a good curve on June 12 which is the right sort of shape. You shouldn't get such a dramatic drop at 2 hours. If Tia were mine I would try a reduction to 0.5 units, check urine for ketones and do another curve once she has settled on the reduced dose. It will take at least 5 cycles to get out of the bouncing and I would give it another few days after that. Keep checking her pre shot sugars and a +2 if you can. It may be she needs a bit more than 0.5 units but another curve on a lower dose will help determine this.

ETA, her pre-shot sugars should be after at least 2 hours of no food, I see you are free feeding
