Re: Guess what Mickey got for Christmas ..ringworm

I don't have any clue how he would have gotten this. He doesn't go outside.
I googled it and it showed pics of it.
I will have to wait until monday to call vet.

Hope everyone is having a very Merry Christmas!!!!

Oh no, Peggy! I don't have any experience with ringworm. I hope that it's easy to treat and you figure out the source.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Oh no, Poor Mickey - is there any chance he or another kitty pulled the hunk of fur out? Not that I would recognize ringworm either...hope he is better soon.

Merry Christmas!

Re: Guess what Mickey got for Christmas ..ringworm

Thanks Marcy!!
Laura, I hope that is the case, someone pulling the hair out...It is in a perfect dime size circle tho.....
I am not familiar with ringworm either. I just put some neosporin on it for now. Crossed fingers...
Merry Christmas to you too!! drinking24

Probably just a hot spot. Tigger used to get them they are allergy related. Since he's been on raw food he doesn't get them anymore. Anyway I hope that is all it is. Let us know.

Ok update, I am hoping it is a hot spot now like Pamela says. I has seemed to scab up.
I actually bought instinct medallions - duck - and chicken flavors.. out of 9 cats 2 touched it barely.
Mickey not at all. He covered it like invisible poo.
Thanks everyone!!

You know, the funny thing about food is that some cats will do that simply because it's not what they're used to. If it's all they are given or if given small amounts of it in between their regular meal periods, they might try it.

I always laugh when they try to cover the food - and it's always a new food. Leahpold is bad about doing that. Then later I will catch her eating some 'cause if that's what there is to eat and she's hungry, she has no choice.

I am a mean mom, I know.

Nine times out of ten Leanne "buries" her food, but she always comes back and eats it - sometimes in a few minutes, sometimes later. I use warm water to mix it all up so I wonder if it smells more so she feels it needs to be "stopped" from stinking up the place and attracting prey.

It looks like he is itching there and licking it.
It is bright red. The pics I saw of ringworm were all different tho. I suspect if it were wouldn't I or someone else have it?
I put neosporin on it a few times.
I want to get him to the vet but I am just going to make my monthly bills. I had 3 cats to the vet last month.

Pamela is there an ointment you put on your kitty that helped?

It has been so long ago....I remember trying a lot of different things which didn't really work. I did try the neosporin too - it didn't really help in the long term, but maybe it gave him some relief in the short term. But they didn't go away.

I just don't remember anything helping too much. I believe I tried the ointment they put on a cow's udders at one time...can't remember the name. But it didn't help much.

I think at one time the vet was going to give him a steroid shot...I said no, of course, because of the diabetes.

Tonight I looked back in my records and I see I did try all kinds of premium cat foods. It seems the sores would go away at times (since I didn't mention them in my notes), but then would come back. When the sores stayed throughout the winter, I figured it couldn't be something from the outside since it snows here and he wasn't outside then.

So eventually I tried the raw, at first giving him half raw and half canned for a long time. Then over time switching to all raw. This was in and around the year 2006. Once I switched to all raw, they didn't come back. He has been sore free since then. :)

I know it isn't easy trying to feed a multiple cat household with raw food. I don't know what I would have done in that case. Maybe get some raw just for Mickey and feed him by himself (mixed with a good canned food) until he gets used to the raw. I know, easier said than done. As long as he smells the other cats 'stinky' food he will want theirs.

Last suggestion, also easier said than done. Make your own raw food and feed them all the same thing (even the picky dry food eaters). They will eventually eat it when they realize they are carnivores. ;-)

If I think of anything else that might help, I will let you know. I also had a picture of Tigger's sores on his neck, but haven't been able to find them yet.

You have so many challenges with your Mickey. You are such a good Mom to him.

If its food related, it could be one ingredient that he is allergic too, so you might try reading labels and see if anything jumps out at you. I found out that Jeddie can't tolerate eggs/dried egg product and since eliminating any food with it he has no diarrhea and he seems to be itching a little less, but I found fleas on him and on of the other cats about 6 weeks ago and treated them all with Frontline, so maybe that is what is helping the itching.
