My kitty Smokey is using ProZinc however we still have to adjust his dose and get a sliding scale going. My vet was wanting us to give him 4 units twice a day and also prescribed dry food. Just recently started testing at home and found a dramatic decrease in his blood sugar once we got the wet food started and doing home testing. Yesterday was his first day without any dry food and his number went from 309 to 164 in 24 hours and then was 48 this morning. We are currently feeding Friskies in a variety of pate flavors.

Wet food can make a huge change in the amount of insulin required as you have already seen! Thank goodness you were hometesting! What sort of dose are you giving right now? Especially with a diet change, we advocate going back down to 1u and starting from there. Many kitties after a diet change will only need that much, and some even still need less than that! They tested him when he got to the vet and he was 66. They waited awhile and then got over 400. Of course that was probably after he ate high carb W/D wet or dry food while he was there. All the vet wanted to do was drop it to 3 units instead of 4 even though we got a 48 this morning. No way is that happening. I will be dropping it down to 1 unit and testing to see what we get. They just don't seem to get that being at the vet is what makes him stressed and gives high readings. Plus he didn't have any insulin this morning. They also want to see him again in a month. Sigh. He will never get regulated while he is there. :roll:
 
I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. This scenario is a very familiar one to me. Every vet I have personally encountered follows the same mantra as yours, and really tries to discourage hometesting. We both know now that hometesting saves kitty lives! Stay strong - they will eventually turn around when they see the progress you have made.

BTW that 'zoom' to 400s could be due to many things - insulin wore off, higher carb food, and the body freaking out about that lower number it hasn't seen in a *long* time!
 
Well, maybe in a month he will OTJ. ( Anti jinx)

I might be more cautious, depending on your number and maybe do .5 units. It will take a while for the dry food from the vet to wear off and he missed a dose.

Have you given your dose tonight? If not, post with your reading and let us give you some ideas.

Diabetes is a disease treated at home with vet consultation. Some many vets just do not get this....
 
Smokey is not home yet, my mom should be on her way with him right now. She was picking him up. It is 4 pm here right now and we generally don't give a shot until around 7:30 or 8 but I will post when we do get the number.
 
Welcome! And congratulations on home testing! You are way ahead of the game, many people come here before they start testing and often have a lot of difficulty at first. I think you are very wise to realize you have to drop the dose, and not just follow your vet's recommendations . You have already seen what a difference the food can make. Keep up the good work!
 
Sara, I agree to either .5 or 1unit if you can get a test in after a few hours.
And I wonder if you can get a spread sheet going. Did I miss it? Is one up already?

Given the low PS this morning and the high carb food, if you get a shootable PMPS # I wouldn't go any higher than .5 unit. You can always raise the dose once everything settles down a bit.

You can work with Sue & Oliver to get a spreadsheet up for us, she's a pro at that.

Congrats on home testing, you may have saved his life this morning.

Watched for your pmps, but have to get to sleep. Hope you go conserative and give .5 units. Post your morning ps number and we'll watch for you and Smokey.

Just wanted to say hello and welcome. Sounds like you are having great success with the diet change. My cat Max did too. Once I got him off the prescription dry food and on low carb wet, he really turned out. Keep us posted on how Smokey is doing. As you've already read, we can all sympathize about vets that don't know a whole lot about feline diabetes...pretty common. The help I received on this forum has been invaluable.
