So we are battling the regulation of BG and Louis developed Neuropathy a few months ago. He's on B12 (the proper cat kind), and still walking and jumping but back legs are pretty wobbly and unstable and walking on wrists.

This has created a very unpleasant problem with the litter box. His back paws are crusted with litter and pee. Yuck. Then it gets all over my house and in MY BED. Ugh.

Looking for advice....What kinds of litter do you guys use? Right now he's in sand. A good brand that controls smell, but OMG, the sand is everywhere. I clean it 4-5 times a day. Any other advice you can give I'm ever grateful.
TIA

Hi!

oh dear I so much feel your pain the exact same thing happened to Minnie and she was also even peeing outside the box once her neuropathy got worse. You’re on the right track and I’m sure that won’t happen to Louis. B12 is great. I had to switch litter because it was a nightmare. I had the sand clumping kind and it was all over the house, my bed and the small clumps would stick to her back legs and butt :( I settled on Okocat for long haired cats even thought both my cats are short haired. I get it from chewy it’s a bit more expensive but the wood pieces are big and don’t stick to anything. It tends not to clump or control odor as well as well, but I’d rather deal with that than the litter everywhere nightmare. She would get it all over her body too. I’d brush her and tons of sand would come off :arghh:It’s also hard to sift because the pieces are large so I had to get a special scoop. Here are both links:

Me again. I just noticed it’s on sale at chewy now for under $9! That’s a great deal. When I started buying it it was $19.99 urghhh!

OMG, what you describe is exactly what I am going through. It gets all stuck to his back paws and then it's like CEMENT! Ugh. Then we try to wash it off in the sink and well he's having NONE of that and we both have the wounds to prove it. THANKS SO MUCH FOR SUGGESTION AND AND LINKS! I'm going to order right now.

We haven't had problems with neuropathy but I'm thinking that anything that clumps will likely give you trouble. We use wood stove pellets. The pellets really absorb any kind of smell and when they get wet, it turns to sawdust. The cats do track the sawdust out of the LB, but if they aren't too ambitious with their digging, it's easy enough to clean up. We have 4 cats in the house and 5 LB but for some reason, they all tend to pick the same LB box (can be a different box each day) and just use that one. So, I don't try to sift/pick out the poo, I just dump the whole thing when the majority of the pellets get wet. $5-6 for a 40 lb bag - goes a long way. If you want, you can pick out the poo and use the sawdust as mulch.

Thanks so much Judy! Great advice. Curious, where do you get your wood pellets? Pet store?

So the other thing I used to do, not that she tolerated it much better but it was easier on me than washing her on the sink which I did have to do a few times with poop accidents, is I used baby wipes to get the hard to get crap from her paws. And you can even soak the baby wipes a bit in lukewarm water so it will dissolve the clumps a bit better. Again, I’ve been there and feel your pain but it will all go away as the neuropathy improves and the diabetes. The pee amounts won’t be so much and there won’t be as much urine just sitting there under his back paws. Good luck!! :cat:

Lol, Minnie couldn’t be more ambitious with her digging. It goes everywhere, across the room sometimes :arghh:
