Just got a call from the vet. Greylie has kidney problems. I am all upset. Is there anybody out there who has experience with this and can help me and give me some pointers ect. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Before getting upset, we need specifics. Because sometimes vets diagnose kidney failure or problems when it is more like kidney insufficiency which is totally doable. Could you post the lab results?

In the meantime, do a search of the forum using the term CRF as there are some great websites, or look up Holly and Spader as she has links in her signature.

Thank you. I did check Holly and learned a lot. Unfortunately I did not ask for a copy but she said it was 'not bad'.. whatever that means. She advised 1/2 kidney problem food and 1/2 diabetic food since we have to 'balance' him. He is diet controlled. I will take him back in 3 months. He is drinking a lot and I want to buy purified water. Ours is heaily softened. Bt the way my own kidney function is lower than normal too.. 52 instead of 60 and up. I guess there are variations. She just said that Greylie's numbers were a little high but does not want to do more than diet until I go back.

The foods good for diabetes are good for kidneys. Newer thinking is to wait to change to lower protein foods until "end stage". Merlyn ate Wellness canned. You do need to pay attention to the phosphorus levels of the foods tho. Dont let them talk you into the rX foods.

Don't get upset - ok easy for me to say - when I got the same diagnosis for Sydney, I had to hold back the tears until I got to the car.

Then I started researching and learning and realized, she is in early stages and can have many more years left.

I'm feeding her the low carb diabetic diet, and adding lots of water to her food. As water is important to help the kidneys flush and function.

Yes, there will come a time when phosphorus binders, squids may be needed, but that's a long way away.

So, for now, concentrate on food and water and remember - she problem doesn't think anything is wrong with her....
