Our cat Nikita has been on insulin shots now for a little over a year. The price of Humulin N is staggering and I would love to find a less expensive way to by it. I'm overwhelmed by the number of overseas websites and am very concerned about the quality of what we might get.

Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations of an online site we might find this? We currently buy from the nearest Walgreens and pay around $80. It's been going up in the last 6 months, almost every time we buy a new vial.

Thanks in advance -
Michelle

Hello Michelle and Nikita (what a pretty name!), and welcome to FDMB,

I think there are very few people here using Humulin N, but hopefully someone here can help you with this question.

Most folks here use Lantus, or protamine zinc insulins like PZI, or Levemir, which are gentler but longer lasting insulins (in the cat's system).

How are you finding that Humulin N is working for your cat? Do you have any recent blood glucose numbers for Nikita?

Welcome to you and your 'extra sweet' kitty! If you just have to have Humulin N and not change to a better insulin for cats, Walmart sells Humulin N for about $30/vial....or at least they did 6 months ago....

HUGS!

Just note that the per unit cost of Lantus is almost twice that of N. If N is working OK I would stay with it. My Twigie had excellent control with N.

Note that Humulin N lasts roughly 6-8 hours in most cats. As a result, the 4-6 hours before the next shot, the glucose may jump up. ways to manage this include picking up the food 6 hours after the shot OR dosing every 8 hours (total daily dose divided into 3rds).
