Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy – Eskimo legend

The stars shone a little brighter last night, as my little Hope moved on to her next life. …a life free of discomfort, meds, and weakened immune systems.

I met Hope December 14th of last year; she was probably about 5 months old. Surrendered by her previous owner, she became a foster w/ the local humane society. Due to neglect, she had a terrible eye ulcer, and was scheduled to have her eye surgically removed the following day. Instead, I volunteered to take her to a veterinary ophthalmologist who had treated several of my cats for the same condition, and made the arrangements. Two days later, Hope went for treatment and by noon was back at my house for her follow-up care. She was already looking and feeling better. Her treatment consisted of several weeks of eye drops – as many as 15/day. Because the eye had been an immediate concern, they hadn’t run the usual tests on her when she came into the foster program. When they did, her leukemia test came back positive. Given that the number of healthy animals needing homes is so great, the organization’s policy is to PTS those w/ FIV or Leukemia. I was heartbroken. Anyone who had held this little girl felt her love embrace them, and heard purrs that could make your heart skip a beat. She was coming home with me to stay.
There were a couple of flare-ups with her eye, but she continued to thrive in her new home. By last week, she was up to 6 pounds! (a far cry from my 20 pounders!). However, these past few days, her appetite waned, and she was breathing heavy. I took her in yesterday to get checked out, thinking it would probably turn out to be a hairball or blockage. Unfortunately, the x-rays showed fluid in her abdomen and lungs, and she experienced respiratory distress as they tried to get the second view, having to have oxygen. It was not looking good, and between her stress level and her compromised immune system, I was given some options. The tech, who’s been a friend for 20+ years, had had a cat with a similar condition. She moved mountains for her, and prolonged her life 3 weeks. But it was a difficult time for the kitty.

So late yesterday afternoon, I made the hardest decision we have to make, to free her from her weakened body. Fly free, sweet ray of Hope! I love you.

Some favorite thoughts:
Imagine the beauty of it – that moment when the soul of a loved one returns to the stars, the voices each whispering, I remember you.

We can’t know why the lily has so brief a time to bloom in the warmth of sunlight’s kiss upon its face, before it folds its fragrance in and bids the world good-night to rest is beauty in a gentler place. …But we can know that nothing that is loved is ever lost, and no one who has ever touched a heart can really pass away, because some beauty lingers on in each memory of which they’ve been a part. – Ellen Brenneman

Re: Grayson's sister Hope

(((Lu-Ann))) I am so sorry. Fly free little Hope rb_icon

You gave her love and a chance to enjoy her life, as short as it was. We don't cause these problems (like FIV/FeLV), but we are given the choice to love as long as possible or not. I think most of us here would choose to love and be heartbroken than to not love and care.

This is particularly poignant to me as my sister fostered a litter of kittens where two tested positive at first. She had both of them at home until they could be retested. One of the converted to negative, but the other one, a little girl did not. Of course this little girl was one of those rare kittens that immediately loves you and wraps herself around your heart. My sister is keeping her and praying that she will have more time on this earth.

We never know how long they have here - or how long any living being has with us. All we can do is love them while they, and we, are here.

Re: Grayson's sister Hope

Hope did her name proud and you did right by Hope. Bless you for taking on her pain and letting her go before she suffered. You're right it IS the hardest gift to give.
'Dear God...
Please kiss little Hopes head and tell her mommy loves and misses her.

My sincere condolences,
jeanne

Re: Grayson's sister Hope

Oh, Lu! A sad day to get on and see two angels have received their wings. One who lived a full life and one who was just starting out.

It is with grace you took in Hope not knowing how short or long a time you had.

Re: Grayson's sister Hope

I am so sorry to hear about Hope, Lu. She certainly enjoyed a lovely life with you and was likely smiling every day to wake up to a home so filled with love, good food, snitches and caring. What a gift to give a kitty who had never had those pleasures.

Re: Grayson's sister Hope

I'm sorry Lu but glad you gave her such a good life for the short time she was here.

LuAnn, you gave her so much more life than she would have had. Bless you for being there for her when she needed you and when she had to leave for The Bridge.

Re: Grayson's sister Hope

Thank you all for the kind words about my dear purr-fect baby Hope. She is dearly missed... especially the way she would FLY through the kitchen chasing after Moochie, the crinkle ball, a fly, or a lazer light! And her chair in front of the birdfeeder is visibly empty. Not sure how the birdies will survive without her nearly constant supervision!

On reading the e-mail about Hope, my sister shared these words (from a headstone in Ireland): Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

Trusting that all those who have suffered losses this week and recently will find comfort in the memories of their special babies.

Thanks for caring!

Lu-Ann

When Hershey came for a visit, Doug & Libby's daughter fell in love with Hope! Here's one of my favorite pictures of her with Jessica.

Fly free beautiful Hope and land ever so softly at the Bridge. wings_cat

Thanks so much! She was the sweetest little purr-box you've ever held! She couldn't decide if she wanted to be a Tabby or a Siamese - her markings were beautiful - matched her personality - and she SO loved to be held or in your lap!

Lu,

So sorry to hear of your loss of Hope.......Sounds like you gave her lots of wonderful love......

Lu, why didn't you message me & tell me?
I am so so sorry about Hope. She is a sweet cat angel now. Free to fly high in the blue sky's. Living a life of good health & eating lots of fish & catnip.

I am so sorry! :YMHUG:

I was browsing here in the Lev group and just saw this.
I'm so sorry, LuAnn. Hope was a beautiful little kitty.
I know you gave her much love and care and made the last months of her life happy.
You saved her from a certain fate of being PTS with more months of life with a mom who loved her and lots of furry playmates.
Even though your time was short with you on this earth, it was quality time and she felt safe and loved.
Fly free little Hope until you see mom and your furry friends again. wings_cat

Oh my gosh how did I miss this.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Hope, she was a beautiful girl and a lucky girl to have found you.

Thanks to all for the kind words and support. It's amazing how much one little kitty (even a short-timer) can be missed. And how sad her best friend Moochie Pooch is - without her to play chase and watch the birdies with! She's in the yard with several others now, right out from my kitchen window - where she loved to watch the birdies from.

I am so sorry Lu-Ann. Got home from vacation last night and was checking in here on Grayson. Thinking of you and all your critters.
