Good morning all...

Thanks for the subliminal messages you sent me last night via Dom the Dog. Jack also heard some and insisted on another early out this morning as well, then decided to stay out and eat grass! hmfp!

So Last night Grayson was doing some kooky things.

PMPS 413 Shot 4.5u
+2.5 342
+4.5 311
+8.5 374 - I fed him a whole can here...
AMPS (+14) 353
RECHECK w/ NM -341

What did I tell you about feeding them overnight and the effect on the AMPS? Hmmm...

So last night, I found a package by the front door - the Nova Max BG/Ketone meter has arrived (free from a link on a thread ~2 wks ago)! After doing the control tests on both, I checked his BG w/ both this morning - was pleased with a 12 point differential - about 4%. I like the consistency!!! I followed up on him in the litter box, and it was a solid NEGATIVE. Then checked the blood for ketones. Not quite as excited about the 5.4 mmol it registered. IF the mmol is consistent with the numbers on the ketone test strips bottle (urine strips), it's registering a trace. Book says: <.1 = LO; > 8.0 = HI. So to me that looks like a high TRACE... (regardless - no rebooting his insulin at this time - and the BAM! dose is looking more likely!) Book says normal non-diabetic number is < .6 - AND it says if K is between .6-1.5mmol/L and BG> 250, it may indicate devt of a medical concern. If K>1.5 and BG> 250, contact professional immediately.

Have to order more ketone test strips, as pkg only came with 2, so will be keeping a close eye on him in the meantime. And doing fluids shortly. No sign of infection of any sort, and no loss of appetite - clearly! So I'm at the "watch & wait" mode. Will keep you all tuned in!

Re: Grayson 3/29

Thought my name might be mud after coming down so hard on HB. I WISH Grayson had Euk's numbers! I'm so thrilled to make a high yellow!!! Low blue would make me dance on tabletops! dancing_cat (well, maybe at home!)

So... +4 he was 327. That's about normal for him... he would've started dropping soon, albeit just a little, but I knew I needed to do the fluids, so that happens most easily w/ his face in a food bowl. So.. no telling what I'll see or when I'll see it... will keep you tuned in.

Thanks for keeping up w/ us!

Re: Grayson 3/29

Hey, no worries, I understand, and besides, it wasn't all that bad. Online communications can be tricky from lack of non-verbal cues, so it's easy to read into stuff that is not really there. Besides, I think it's only human that we might get uptight, anxious, and say the wrong thing when we worry about our kitties. And, it seems your struggle seems much harder than mine, so I understand where you are coming from. :YMHUG: :-D

Re: Grayson 3/29

Dancing on the table, Lu?? Maybe we need to start Dom subliminal messages about how to set up the video camera!!

Have a great day!

Re: Grayson 3/29

Thursday in review:

AMPS (+14) 353 Shot 4.5
Fed 1.5 cans FF Turkey
RECHECK w/ NM -341
Ketone - meter 5.4; strips NEGATIVE
+4 327
100 mL SubQs
fed 1 can FF T
+5.25 376 (50 point food spike?)
+10.25 389 /367 / NM 313
PMPS 368 / NM 298 (now I'm wondering if it's my meter?) Shot 4.5
Fed 1 can FF Chicken

This morning I was impressed with the 12 point differential in the meters. But tonight, 70 points???

Re: Grayson 3/29

Jenn - Thought you were headed to bed...but, if you're up and I'm up, I think Lu-Ann should be up, too!!! Maybe we can get Baxter and Hershey to send Grayson subliminal messages. I'm afraid that's the only kind Hershey could send right now, he's zonked! ;-)

Re: Grayson 3/29

Getting ready to test Baxter & go to sleep.

Lu needs to be up....GET UP LU!! Take care of your cat, Grayson!

Re: Grayson 3/29

I fully intended to be in bed early last night... but I have a hard time stepping away from the computer! Last night I was playing with FOUR meters. The first "True" meter I bought at Walgreens, (and found out wasn't so true), the new Nova Max, and the 2 Relions - Ultima and Confirm. Testing me, testing Grayson (man, is he patient!), feeding shrimpies (that may have been the ticket!)... By the time I actually crawled into bed, it was after 1 am. FORCED Dom & Jack to go out - no 2 am or 5 am outies! And then locked them OUT of the bedroom. I think I was asleep before hitting the pillow! - so even the subliminal didn't come through... thank goodness! But 1:00 is still not a good time when the alarm is set for 6:30! Needless to say, we're on the late shift today!

I'm wondering if it's just that my meter is registering high... will fill in the details below, but it's consistently registered higher than the other 2 more recent acquisitions. I bought strips for the Relion Confirm, so if I wasn't testing Grayson enough already, he's gonna get "double dipped" for a couple of days. :o

So last night...
PMPS 368 / NM 298 (now I'm wondering if it's my meter?) Shot 4.5
Fed 1 can FF Chicken
+2 RU 253/393
+2 NM 274
+2.75 RC 341
+5 RU 243
+5 RC 249

Grayson today...
AMPS RU 420/443
AMPS RC 360 (does this make you guys wonder too???)
Shot 4.5

Extra ear kisses to Grayson for donating so much interesting data.

Lunch only resulted in 2 tests, as I had to run to Wally World for more test strips! ;-) God forbid that we should run out! Grayson was okay w/ 2 tests... unfortunately he's still having some turnip moments, so it often takes more than 2 pokes. But turnip or guinea pig, he's extremely cooperative!

+5.25 RU 309 (111-134 point variance from PS)
+5.25 RC 338 (22 point variance)

I think the meters are taking turns alternating highs & lows!

Grayson will get LOTS of extra ear kisses, (everyone is invited to blow him some air kisses!) and even more valuable (to him, at least) FD shrimpies and/or chicken!!! YUM!!!

I realize these shrimp are on the barbie, but it's the best I could do.

I read someone (I want to say I got it from Teresa.) suggested that you can scrape the blood drop onto the back of your thumbnail if you want to test multiple times and test from that sample. That way you don't have to poke kitty each time. I've done that a couple of times.

Hey, Lu,
I don't feel qualified to give dosing advice, but I'm confused as to why trying so many meters, I think maybe this may be making you too confused, not knowing what number to believe. Maybe taking Grayson to the vet for a blood glucose drawn from the vein and compare simultaneous readings with the other meters? I don't think any one meter will be exactly acurrate, but sticking with one may make for a more consistent pattern and decisions. Just a thought

I've done that before, and actually did it last night. Keep in mind, however, that Grayson doesn't like to bleed. And when he does, he's not generous with it. So if I can, I certainly will.

I'm my own worst enemy sometimes, when I get in my OCD zone. First I wanted to fill my spreadsheet, then I wanted to know why I'm getting some really wonky numbers. Lately I've gotten so many extremes from my Relion Ultima meter, I decided to pick up another one. I may be converting to the Relion Contour as my primary one. ... but then the one that does ketones and BG arrived... So, actually I was comparing them all for accuracy. You can only imagine my surprise when I got such a wide range of numbers! Once I have a couple of days worth of numbers, I'll settle in with one that will be used regularly... I really wasn't trying to make this an even BIGGER mountain out of a molehill than I usually do  ... I just thought perhaps the flat cycles and funky numbers might not all be food-related - maybe the meter was one of the variables too.

Better get home... Grayson might start chewing the legs off the table otherwise!

Lu,

I used to compare after i had the nightmare with freestyle meter. I do have an alpha track that i compare to from time to time. It's always about 30pts off. You really will drive yourself crazy using so many meters. There is so much variance from one reading to the next. I could test on the same blood drop with the same meter twice and get different results. Too many variables in the way if you look at it scientifically. So don't drive yourself crazy. As long as you have one that is pretty close to the one the vet's use(alpha trac) then you will be alright. Just stick to one only when you decide! It's so much easier! Good luck! I'm sure i'll be checking in with you more tonight on the "owl club".

Oh Lu,
I am so sorry you are doing this and I so feel your pain
Donna and I went thru this about a month ago
Dont get too many meters involved like I did
you will drive yourself to drink!
I wound up getting the alpha track and using that one as it is made for animals
The strips are expensive but....
I did not have luck with the relion, it was all over the place when I compared to Alphatrack for about a week
Good luck and dont go to crazy! @-)

Hey Lu- Ann,

Did Grayson get a 5.4 on the Nova Max? If I remember correctly you give him fluids? I test Sid's ketones with the Nova Max every day and he has never been higher than a 3.1 and that only happened once. Usually he is LO or less than 0.6. Anything higher than 0.6 and I start freaking out. I note all of this on his SS. Someone asked me to make an extra tab on his SS with a comparison of his ketone meter and his urine strip results and so that is a project I plan to work on starting tonight.

I am glad you have the meter now. I tested Sid's glucose with the nova max a few times (100 strips worth) and found it reads relatively lower than the other meters. Lately I've been using the Bayer contour but I also have a Relion confirm and micro.

Oh and I ordered the ketone strips from the American Diabetic Wholesale for 23.00/10 box.

I agree, don't drive yourself crazy with the different meters. You won't find the perfect one. We are looking for trends and how the insulin is working during the cycles. If one meter is higher it will still show the patterns.

Can't stay up late w/ the Owl club tonight - gotta go to a workshop for work tomorrow, and I've been dragging all week... NO SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES TONIGHT!!! got it???

I promise I'm not gonna get totally crazy w/ the meter thing. Wow, I never imagined so many people would chime in about it! But you have to admit that the 100+ point variations from one meter to another are crazy. Maybe this isn't completely obvious, as I haven't updated the spreadsheet today, but some of these numbers are nuts! The difference of 6-29 don't worry me, but over 100? There's gotta be something wrong!

Here's a summary:
RU RC NM (difference)
353 --- 341 (12)
367/389 --- 313 (54)
368 --- 298 (70)
253/393 341 274 (119 or 21?)
243 249 --- (6)
420/443 360 --- (60)
309 338 --- (29)
366 341 280 (25/61/86)
333 438 --- (105)

Have a great weekend all - good night for now!

Ooohh you who...teheheee...Lu...Grayson.

This is my first real opportunity to post today & you are going to sleep. Your no fun.

I'm not sure what to think about the different meters. I would pick one that's strips we're affordable & stick with that. I don't want to log on one day to hear to been taken away by the people in the white coats.
Using/testing 3 different ones is causing you to mistrust Grayson numbers. You can't do that to yourself you will go crazy.
