Good morning... or at least good middle of the night!

Shot early yesterday, so here we are paying the price! Found the secret to actually GETTING OUT OF THE BED with the alarm - put alarm clock across the room! Yep, MUCH more effective!

AMPS 411
shooting 2.0... as soon as he cooperates, that is! Kinda grumpy this morning - perhaps tired of the bigger needles from SubQs?
NEG-TRACE ketones. WOO HOO!!! Almost all gone! It's officially been 1 week since the scare (Moderate ketones). Can't be too careful!

... and now, to shoot and back to the rest of my night! Hope everyone has a great day!

Re: Grayson 3/2

Good morning LuAnn
I am so happy to hear about the trace ketones
that is wonderful news!
Hope you have a great day and hopefully Grayson's number willstart dropping soon!
Have a great day!

Re: Grayson 3/2

Morning Lu-Ann, ~O)

I know about that alarm trick. I use it all the time. ;-)

Tell me that you are going to start shifting his shot to get out of the early morning hell you are currently in? I think I would be so afraid that I would still oversleep it, or give a fur shot, or get the dosing screwed up. My brain isn't too functional at that time of morning.

Re: Grayson 3/2

Because I've been so retentive about "filling in all the boxes" on my spreadsheet, my sleep pattern has been in constant flux. The biggest thing isn't waking up in the middle of the night - it's the getting out of bed part! My dogs are often the reason why I've had readings at 2 or 3 am - it's not like they don't sleep all day, so why not, right? So I've gotten pretty acclimated to the poking w/ half asleep eyes... When the alarm goes off, however, I think it kicks in the "it's the morning" ritual. Eyes a little wider open. But then again, I've questioned if I haven't done a couple of fur shots lately too, so, no tellin'!

Grayson seems a little hungry this morning...will give him a little something shortly. Serves him right for letting the dogs take his bowl off the table (although there wasn't much left)! Since he started NOT gulping 1 or 2 cans of food down, he's gotten used to a little something every time I poke him... which will not be hourly today!

So...
AMPS 411 shot 2.0
+4.75 369
+5.5 312

Other than the hitting the 400s again, it seems he's still relatively flat w/ the 2.0u. Hard to imagine it was just a couple weeks ago he was riding for 20 hours on .2u! Unless old Mr. P showed up - but apparently, he's left the building with Elvis!

Re: Grayson 3/2

Good morning Lu and Grayson!

Hate to see the 400's. SOoooo glad to see the trace ketones as i know you are thrilled. Poor grayson with the big needles for subQ's. He is so brave and you too!

Hoping that you start to break through these flats. They are icky!

I know all about the alarm trick too. I have to do it for my daughter that way too. She hates it on these cold mornings to have to get out of her nice snuggly warm bed. Oh well. Gotta use what works!

How manyt dogs do you have? We have one very spoiled golden retriever that is like another child. We love her so much though and cheerish everyday with her. She is now almost 12yrs old and slowling down. They are a blessing aren't they!

Grayson and his kitty siblings have two dogs. Actually, some of the elder siblings adopted Dom as a puppy, (PetSmart rescue) who helped raise Grayson and his littermates. I'd come home to find kittens wet from head to tail - Dom had groomed them! He still does, and they groom him - especially Grayson, although most of 7 yr old Dom's grooming attention if focused on Jack, his dog! Jack came from a local no-kill shelter at ~ age 1, and had to be "test driven" to ensure he was kitty friendly. He passed the first week, but about 3 weeks later I found an ulcer on Grayson's mom Tedi's butt. She's still not warmed up to him, and that's been about 5 years!

It's not uncommon to see D/J snuggling w/ kitties - depending on where they are in the house, everyone has their favorite spot!

Back to Grayson & today's summary:

Grayson's looking skinny today... he really needs some carbs to fill him out - YIKES!!!

Re: Grayson 3/2 - and introducing Dom & Jack!

Love the pics of Dom and Jack. They are so handsome! They really are such a blessing to have in our lives. My annie(golden retriever) has light red hair like copper and my daughter and me. We have a picture of all us laying together and we all blend in so well. Copper loves to snuggle up to annie all the time. Sometimes i see copper actually in annie's arms sleeping. They really love each other, except when copper gets too close to annie's food. they there are some growls.

Thanks for the pics!

Re: Grayson 3/2 - and introducing Dom & Jack!

Good morning all -

I missed the weather last night, but they apparently called it well! I think Kim said it was supposed to be the worst around 6 am. And it was! POUNDING rain! Didn't see any lightning, but then again, my eyes were half shut! Thanks for checking on us!

Dom thought he wanted to go out (and he LOVES to go out and would stay out most of the day if I'd let him!), but changed his mind when I opened the door & he saw the rain. Gave me a look as if to say, "I'll just wait, Mom!" Jack is still crashed on the doggie bed - didn't even look up!

Grayson was famished this morning! I kinda held off last night, since he's been eating somewhat less lately, to ensure he'd have an appetite at AMPS. He did well - still not as much as I'd like, but enough that I was comfortable w/ the shot. He's lounging comfortably on the floor right now, as if to say - "Go on back to bed!" I think I'll comply!

I haven't commented much on your threads, Lu, because I haven't had any brilliant suggestions. But I am wondering if there is any kind of infection going on - something like teeth problems or UTI - that accounts for the ketones cropping up every so often and the high flat numbers regardless of the dose. No dry food, no people snacks? Anything else changed?

Nope, nope and nope. He was in at the vet again on Wednesday afternoon. No infections. Discontinued his AB - that she only gave him because of his slightly snotty nose last Friday. Nothing showed on the blood or urine tests. Teeth look good (wish I could say that for everyone else!)

Keeping an eye to see if he heads to the litter box. Need to check ketones and flush fluids. Right now he's lounging on a pillow from Bo's kitty bed. He looks rather comfortable, and God forbid that I should disturb him, right?

Getting a late start this morning. Will shower and head into the office soon to see if I can make up for some lost time this past week. He may be taking the field trip with me, but unlike Kim's cats, he'll be in a carrier - at least until we get there! Actually, I think he might just enjoy it!

Okay - question for anyone who sees this...

Has anyone gone to the extreme of shaving a little patch of fur to ensure you're not getting a fur shot? I'm wondering if that's the basis for my flat cycles?

I'm going for the trimmer...

I never have gone that far. I shoot around Asher’s shoulder. I shoot when he is crouching down to eat, so there is thin skin there at the shoulder that is easy to pinch and doesn’t seem to have much fat under it. I pull the skin out pretty far, then shoot in at a 45 degree angle. I feel around and rub the area after shooting to make sure it’s not wet.

My dad used to say, "The difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut, it's about 2 weeks!" I think I've said that to every dog/cat/etc I've seen since that had a patch or more shaved!

At DX, he had some mats in his fur. I trimmed some of them out, but one had to be shaved. I used that patch quite a bit for shots, although I try to move them around some.

I've got to get some kind of bulk into him. He IS losing weight. Just popped the baby scale onto the table and he hopped right on. 13.2. YIKES!!! He was 13.4 on Wednesday - same scale. He LOOKS skinnier. Any suggestions? (again, still watching ketones - especially since his appetite is shrinking).

I have heard of people trimming the fur. How long are the needles you are using? I didn't look at the SS, but did the numbers start getting flatter when you switched to U100s? Just thinking out-loud!

2 ounces? Could be a poop or less food onboard when he was weighed this time! I wouldn't worry about that yet!

Before he would snarf the entire can of FF down immediately at PS, AND I was giving 1/2 can at least 2-3 more times a day.

Now, he's eating maybe 3/4 can at PS, then nursing the rest over the next 6 hours or so. So he hasn't had much supplementary food. I've tried watering it down - and even when it's stirred up, he drinks the liquid when I do that. But isn't having the appetite.

He just FINALLY peed - got just the tip of the ketostix - on the trace end of Trace/Small. Had fluids around 12:30.

I know everyone is thinking I'm OCD w/ the numbers (and you're right!), but his version of flat is a range of about 25 points today (that's only about a 7% drop!).

I've got the trimmers out.... what's a "bad hair day" as long as you don't have a fur shot, right?

Hi Luann
ok I admit it!
I shaved shakes in the beginning for months!
He has such thick fur that it took me a long time to not give a fur shot(but still do)
I dont like the flat numbers....
maybe time to raise /.....

I'm glad I'm not TOTALLY out on a limb by myself. Kim questioned the needle length - I don't think it's made much difference, but maybe that's part of it? I've not smelled insulin on him or my finger after a shot (I hold over the needle when pulling it out), and it's already wet from the alcohol, so unless I'm missing the scent of it... not sure.

I shaved a little patch around his shoulder. Not too obvious - not like my black dog w/ white flesh underneath that used to chew... Grayson's skin is the same color as his coat.

I was thinking about an increase too. Will probably hold the PMPS to the 2, using the patch, and see where it takes us. If he continues flat, I may need to up it some. I'm about half hour from PMPS, and the natives are getting restless! Just heard him in the kitchen opening cabinet doors (where the dry kibble USED to be!) - and now he's hovering!

February 12th I changed to the U100s. These have shorter needles, and maybe it was just a fur shot. I don't think so, but no way to know for sure. But I have been holding in the pinks for quite a bit of the time... I would say it's safe that the blocks of red are definitely fur shots... but all the rest???

Gray came to the office with me... he's not impressed! :?

Lu,

Sorry you are having so much trouble with the numbers getting down. I know can be very frustrating. Copper has a ton of hair and i actually, at first, had to wet it a bit and then grab his skin. My daughter holds a flash light there so i can see better when i shoot. Just a thought.

Hope you can figure it all out soon!

An extra set of hands is always helpful - just not always possible when you're the only 2-legged in the house! The shaved patch seemed to make it a little easier, and I just took his BG - 331 @ +2.75... that's the best number so far today! And he usually starts to drop after +3 or +4, so maybe that was the problem.

I'd hate to think I've been shortchanging him all this time... but I alternated between the neck and his patch on his hip, so you'd think I'd have seen different number patterns. Grabbing at straws - and no way to know for sure... but from now on, I think the patch is going to be my friend! And he may end up with more of them so I can move the shot around. Thankfully, he's not too vain!
