gramps is on Prozinc.... due to dental issues his BG stays between 300 to 550.
he is given 5 units every 12 hrs, depending on his numbers...

I am trying to wean him off dry to help his numbers.... Any suggestions? I am guessing that I will not see much of a change until his dental extractions are done. he is 10 yrs old, and such a sweet boy!

does anyone have a place I can get Prozinc inexpensively?

Thanks again Tracy

Hey, Tracy and Gramps -

I moved Hershey to canned cold turkey, but it was before starting his insulin. I do know it's important to keep a check on his numbers while transitioning as I'm told it sometimes makes a drastic difference in their BG. I know that isn't much help, though.

I have seen people post about getting ProZinc through different online places, but each time I check them out, once you add the extra shipping - they come to the same $140 I paid at my vet. I have heard a couple of people say their local Costco carries it, but I haven't had a chance to check with mine, yet. (I always shop at Costco on Sunday afternoons and the pharmacy is closed.) Figured I'd check closer to the time I need a new bottle - but, I'm figuring it's kind of like diapers or formula or gasoline or anything like that that we can't make ourselves - they kind of have us over a barrel, you know?

I hope you find it cheaper somewhere, though.

Take care -

Libby (and Hershey, too!)

Hi Tracy & Gramps!

I take it you are hometesting? Since you have already started insulin. You will slowly have to transation the dry to canned. What I did because Baxter had already started insulin was I mixed the two together. Each time using less dry. Within 5 days I had Baxter off of dry.
During this process you will want to test. Because you are elimanting the dry food his numbers still could drop fast.

Are you having a difficult time getting him to eat canned food?

What state do you live in? Some Target stores in certain states are starting to caring pet meds. I have heard that Costco also carries pet meds. When I checked my Sams club they didn't carry ProZinc & told me I could only buy it from the vet. Which isnt true. They also looked me like I was crazy. They took forever to look in there systems for it. I stood there for 30 minutes. So if they did have it they wouldnt have known. I live in Houston, Texas. My brother said the Sams clubs in Dallas carry pet meds. So I guess it's in selected markets.
When I checked 1800petmeds.com it was very expensive.
I need to find a bottle very soon. I am almost out.

You also have a duplicate post so if you want to delete the other & just have this one. That way all your responses will be on this thread. ;-)

As Jenn said, $140 seems to be a pretty standard price.you can get compounded BCP PZI through your vet - the first vial free, and the rest cheaper. There are mixed opinions about it here. Some people have used it with great success; some with little success. It is compounded in the pharmacy, so the thought is that the quality can vary from one vial to the next.

Eliminating the dry can really make a difference. When we switched Oliver from dry to wet, he came down 100 points overnight. So, as Jenn said, switch slowly and monitor carefully.

If you can set up a spreadsheet, it really helps us see Gramps' history when you need fast advice and it is a great tool for your vet. If you have trouble, ask for help:

Hello Tracy,

Welcome! Yes, this is the correct forum. I get my ProZinc from my vet for $103 per vial and have read that some Costco stores carry it for only $75 per vial - if yours carries it, you need to order it 3 days in advance. You don't need a Costco card, just tell them you're going to the pharmacy. I didn't realize that my vet was charging a low price. You may wish to contact several vets in your area and ask about their prices. The advice I've read was to contact poor areas in your geographic location for the best prices. Don't know if that's necessarily true because my vet is located in a very affluent town but, on the other hand, he is older and has his own animal hospital. So perhaps vets associated with pet hospitals? It looks to me like some vets simply increase the price terribly and others do so less. Best wishes to you and Gramps.

myvet doesnot carry it andI have plenty to wait until he sees my vet on the 14th....
BUT one thing I do need is test strips, I maybe have ten left... DCIN just sent me the kit with50 strips two weeks ago, but since we just started testing a couple weeks ago, we have noticed we've had to use more than one test strip, if not enough blood ...lol. We are in a learning period... Andis there any ideas out there to get more blood? WhenI poke him in the ear, sometimes it's a lot, sometimes just a little, little more than a lot most of the time...
Any suggestions where I can order the contour test strips?

Thanks so MUCH!!! Tracy and Gramps....

Oh and I think after all this he will be living out his FINAL yrs with us! We where going to adopt him out.....

Hi Tracy -

I get my strips at WalMart (which is handy if I run out at 3 am), but a lot of people buy them online. Most pharmacies carry a variety of strips - just make sure they're the right ones for your meter, as they're not returnable. If you google Diabetic Test Strips, you'll find several places. A lot of folks order from AmericanDiabetesWholesale.com There's a link on the home page: http://www.felinediabetes.com/pet-suppl ... #affiliate - a portion of the purchase price comes back to this board.

As for keeping Gramps... Congratulations to you both! How very kind of you, and how lucky for him!!!
