Hi: I am new to this forum and from what I've read, this is the place to be. Gracie was diagnosed with FD about a year ago. My vet switched her to Lantus because the other insulin was not working for her. About 6 weeks ago, my other cat CT was diagnosed with FD - his BG was at 27.9 (this is a Canadian measurement). I knew I had to do something because having 2 cats on insulin was just not something I wanted to tackle: so after a lot of research I discovered that I was doing so much harm feeding my cats dry food...little did I know that switching my cats to strictly wet food would solve all my problems. Both of my cats are down to 5 and 5.6 (Canadian measurement) and doing great. Even my vet is impressed. The problem I am having now is with Gracie - she complains all the time like she is hungry. I feed her 2 tins of Hills Prescription Died m/d per day, and the other thing that is happening now is she is trying to eat my green fake plants. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do - or why she is trying to eat my plants. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Hi Lynda, and welcome to the board!

I have to tell you that reading your topic title made me laugh, and the last line or two of your post had the same effect!
It is so great that you were able to get both cats regulated by changing their diet. What is even more amazing is that you were able to do so feeding Hills m/d! I tried that on Bob, and he gobbled it for 2 or 3 days, and then wouldn't touch it. When I got a good whiff of it, I could understand why! When I read what you said about her eating fake plants, all I could think was "well, because they probably taste better than the Hill's M/D!"
Sorry, but thanks for making me smile.

I had a girl kitty named lillian who used to eat anyting and everything, but I never figured out why. There are products (I think one of them is called Feliway?) that you can spray on areas you don't want kitty to mess with. Lots of people use it to stop kitties scratching the furniture, for instance. I don't know "why" Gracie is eating them, but using a product like that might make her stop. The constant hunger is odd too. I don't know the metric values as to what is considered "normal", but is 5 to 5.6 in the normal no-more-insulin range?

I was extremely pleased that I was able to solve my problem with such an easy solution. There should be more education for new cat owners on the perils of dry cat food. Whenever I see somebody buying dry cat food I am sorely tempted to relate my story to them. I have done so a few times and only get a "take off" look from the people. My vet has told me to monitor Gracie and CT once a week to make sure that nothing is changing and that 4 - 8 is a normal range and as long as both of them are eating, not loosing weight, not drinking excessive amounts of water and are basically happy then I don't have to give them insulin. Testing is getting a little easier now. I found that putting a roll of white tape under the ear then using the lancet makes the job much easier. I have tried feliway years ago with another cat of mine and I found that I did not like the smell. Will have to look for another solution. Thanks for the tip though.

Many people feed small frequent meals to keep their diabetics happy. You can used a programmable timed feeder for the food if you are not home during the day.

FYI, you don't need to feed the M/D  It's expensive, cats tend to get bored of eating it after awhile, and I *think* that it's too high in liver (?) which can potentially cause some health issue. There are many brands of commerically available canned foods you can feed. I know that other Canadian members here feed Fancy Feast, President's Choice, and other brands.

Maybe give your cat a pot of cat grass to safely munch on? Pet stores sell pots of cat grass and growing kits. It is fine for a diabetic to eat cat grass or cat nip  Have you put the fake plants somewhere up high where the cat won't get to it? You can also try bitter apple spray or other similar yucky-tasting product to discourage your cat from trying to eat the fake plants.
