Good vibs needed please

Hi, can I please ask you to send some good vibs for my cat greebo who going into hospital this morning to have part of her thyroid removed. I'm sat here in floods hugging the poor cat. To make matter worse my sugar cat jasper isn't eating and I'm waiting for the results of his blood tests but the vets thinks it either his pancreas or something in his throat. These two cat literally saved my sanity many years ago. It's not a story many people hear because it was such a hard time of my life but I really would like to share it because if anything does happen to greebs I would like someone to know how special she is. About 13 years ago I had my first ectopic pregnancy, I had come out of hospital and felt I'd been run over by a train. My friend came to see me and she handed me this cattle feed bag she had found in the back lane. In it was this hissing spitting little black kitten. That little kitten was greebo, I had to spend so much time socialising her I didn't have time to feel sorry for myself or worry about myself. Then 2 years later I had another ectopic pregnancy, that meant I could no longer have children. Again I just got out of hospital and a friend told me about these kittens who mother wasn't going very well and the owner was going to have then put to sleep. I went round to see then and these little things were only a few weeks old, this little grey and white kitten wobbled out, kept falling over and was in a very bad way. I took him home and bottle fed him every 2 hours and again I didn't have time to worry about myself as I had a little cat who needed me more. I have always thought that these two cats were sent to save me and I feel like I have let them both down. Why didn't I realise how bad a dry food diet would be for a cat. It's common sense when you think about it. Anyway I'm going to put her in her box now and take her to the vets, thanks for listening.

First off, here's a huge (((hug))) for you.

Your story is profoundly moving... It does seem, sometimes, doesn't it, that the universe lends us a hand by sending something or someone that we need at a certain time. And who knows, maybe Greebo and Jasper were indeed sent to you. (But then, conversely, you were sent to them too. And they are extremely lucky to have you in their lives).

Please don't beat yourself up about the dry food issue. Many of us here were feeding our cats dry food prior to a feline diabetes diagnosis. I certainly was; and many here have fed dry food at the recommendation of our vets. We all do what is best for our animals with the information that we have at the time.

I know that you'll be 'on tenterhooks' today until you get that call from the vet that says Greebo is fine and is coming around from the anaesthetic. And then you'll feel a huge surge of relief and will just want to get her home again. Remember that, uncomfortable as all this is right now, you are doing this because you want Greebo to feel better. And hopefully she will be feeling much better soon as a result of what you've done today.

I'm really sorry to hear that Jasper isn't eating. Has this just happened suddenly? Here's hoping he gets a diagnosis soon and that the problem will be easily treatable.

Thanks for the support I've just heard back from the vets and greebs is going fine. :cool: When I spoke to Steve (the vet) this morning he said that he didn't envisage any problems as she was in such good condition. Apparently when they normally see a hyper t cat they are generally in a very poor state, lost loads of weight, fur not good, heart rate very fast etc so he thinks she hasn't long been hyper t and he wasn't even overly concerned about anaesthetic as her conditions so good. This made me feel loads better. I also got a call from jaspers vet (same vets practice different vet) saying jaspers results weren't to bad, he was slightly dehydrated and his kidney function was up slightly and his BG was 17. I had tested him 1.5hrs earlier and it had been 8.8 but she thinks it was probably stress that had sent it up. He's not been eating properly for over a week now (about 20 - 50g food per meal and that's taken me about half an hour to get down him). He is on antibiotics and he does seem slightly better today. He's been doing this strange gulping thing as if his throat is sore but when she looked at it was fine so I'm going to see how he goes with the antibiotics and take him back next week. I have managed to get some thrive cat food down him but not sure how good this is for a diabetic cat. I do know it flipping expensive but as long as he eats something I really don't mind.

Dianne, that's great news and I bet you are SO relieved!

It sound's like Jasper's feeling a bit better too?
When Bertie had something in his throat earlier this year the vet said that cats' throats are really narrow and it's hard to see down any distance by just looking in the mouth. Maybe something has scratched Jasper's throat a little further down than the vet can see...? Here's hoping the anti-biotics do the trick.

Oh, the Thrive canned food is very low carb, I think, but, as you say, the important thing to get Jasper to eat anyway.

Nausea? Tummy upset maybe with the throat clearing symptom?

Maybe ask your vet about an appetite stimulant to counteract the antibiotic. My cat Wink always needs one when he is on an antibiotic.

Hi yeah and his teeth are really good,

Deb, I was actually wondering if you could get anything to help improve his appetite so I think I'll ask next week. He's still only eating a small amount about 50g tonight, he's going up to the bowl and he seems to want to eat but he just seems to lick the food. Walk away, come back to it, lick it again and so on.

That licking and walking away, licking and walking away behavior sounds like nausea. I would try a little Pepcid ac. Get the regular, not the complete version. Regular strength 10mg not the extra strength. Cut the tablets in quarters and give 1/4 tablet twice a day, 30 minutes before you feed. See if that helps at all.
 
I've ordered some Pepcid AC so will see how he goes with these when they arrive. It does seem like he's just not feeling right. I had a cat with renal failure a few years ago and the symptoms were similar expect Bazil used to drink a lot and Jasper isn't. however this morning his BG was 15.9 so for the first time in 10 days hes had insulin and he ate a full 75g tin of thrive but I suspect the higher BG number has meant his hunger has out weighed his sick feeling. confused_cat
