Hello everyone! This is some great news to follow up on my original "insulin resistant/can't gain weight" thread about my cat Cherry. You might recall the first vet I took her to wanted me to have her euthanized. Among other things I was told, "She will starve to death basically," "She's old anyway (she's 13)", and "If we couldn't get her regulated here, you won't be able to."
I'm so glad I didn't and started taking her to another vet! I had my first piece of good news at Cherry's follow-up vet visit yesterday. To my amazement she has gained 1 1/2 pounds! She had been hovering at 6 pounds give or take a couple of ounces since June. Yesterday she was at 7 pounds 8 ounces! This much gain just can't be a fluke. I think it's the start of a trend!
I could not have done it without the wonderful help of everyone on this site. The wealth of information plus your encouragement and support is what has made this turnaround possible. I am convinced that taking Cherry off all sorts of dry foods has made the difference. She began to be even more alert and lively, and then she started regaining some of the weight she had lost earlier this summer. I printed out the Fancy Feast recommended flavors (she is a Fancy Feast addict; also, she actually likes the Purina DM wet food). I have been feeding her the Fancy Feast flavors from the Catkins list, the ones that are high protein and low carb.
I was dreading having the new vet weigh her yesterday. Instead it was cause for celebration!!
She still has some problems with the loose stools. Also, she is still running high 400s and low 500s for BG. But I am so encouraged by her regaining this weight that I now believe the other things will soon improve too.
I can't begin to thank everyone! You literally saved Cherry's life. This has taught me not to automatically accept what a vet says. You were so right about the dangers of dry food and the benefits of an improved diet! Hope it's OK to keep everyone posted! Thank you again so much. Warmest regards, mary d
