I just wanted to thank those who have tried to help us out. After a long discussion with my vet this weekend we have decided to put Gus back on Lantus. He just didn't feel well on Levemir and his numbers were terrible. It didn't matter if he needed more insulin or not, the fact was it made him feel lousy. Levemir is a good insulin and I'm not knocking it, it just doesn't seem to be the one for Gus and my vet agreed.

My vet believes that Gus's ups and downs on Lantus are due to his pancreatitis and IBD which complicate his glucose levels. When he gets inflammation his numbers increase then the inflammation goes down and they decrease - not the same as a cat that just has diabetes. This is why tight control isn't ideal for Gus.

My vet is going to have me try some antioxidents to see if that will help with the inflammation and keep him at steady numbers. She doesn't know if it will work, but we don't have many other options. There really aren't any good treatments for pancreatitis or triad's disease.

Gus's numbers are still terrible because I just switched him back to Lantus Saturday night, however, he is already perking up and jumping up on things which is a good sign. I'm hopeful - I have to be as it's all I have to hold onto sometimes.

Thank you again and I wish everyone the best with their kitties.

Good luck, Rachel. I hope Gus does better on lantus this time.

Can't remember if Gus can/cannot take salmon oil, but it is one of the supplements that is recommended for digestive and cardio health. I use Wild Alaskan Salmon oil and I have heard that red krill oil is even better for cats. You might ask your vet about it.

Good luck Rachel & Gus!

Whatever insulin works best for your cat is the best insulin to use, no matter what it is. You deserve credit for trying the Levemir, in the hopes that it would help Gus, since our poor little kitties have only us to rely on to make these decisions and help make them feel better. (((HUGS)))

Thank you everyone. I appreciate the well wishes. I hope everyone's kitties do well with their protocol.
And thank you for the info about the salmon Sheila. Gus is actually eating Avoderm Wild Caught Salmon which is rich in Omega 3 and 6 oils. His ear problems have cleared up and his fur feel like chinchilla fur. We have been lucky that he can tolerate that food with his IBD as it has proven to have a lot of benefits for him. Unfortunately he will not touch anything with the salmon oil which I got from Whole Foods so I ended up taking those capsules! However - he is getting enough of the oils from the Avoderm.

Rachel: Just checking in to see how you and Gus are doing! Hope the transition is going well for you both!
