Hi Lantus Land,

I have a question: As many of you know, Gobbles completed and officially was OTJ on 5/30/13 (He had his last shot of insulin on 5/16/13). Therefore, he has been OTJ for roughly the past 7 weeks.

He has test 5 times, 41 to 49, since 6/2/13. His 14 day average is 55 and his 30 day average is 61.

I was browsing in LL just now, and read a post from "GatorsRUs" today regarding OTJ and part of Jill's response stated:

Most remission cats are able to stay in the normal range all of the time (50 to 80 mg/dl), although there are a few cases of sporadic higher and lower BGs.

I am slightly concerned. He was 51 one hour post-feeding yesterday. He has a vet appointment Friday for routine lab work and physical exam.

How common is it for OTJ cats to have some readings in the 40s? Perhaps he is one of the "sporadic cats"? He is on a low carb diet (5% or less) of friskies and fancy feast. He gets a small amount of YAZC; maybe 15 pieces every few days. I use them to exercise him by throwing them a distance away and he chases then eats them. "Back in the day", pre-dx, this was a game we played all the time although I unknowingly was using dry, high carb treats!!!He hit his pre-dx weight on 5/1/13, and has been staying the same weight, give or take a few ounces since then.

Any thoughts?

Hi Kat, as they say ECID. Some cats just normally have a lower BG. I've heard of some civvies who normally test in the 30s. It sounds like Gobbles is doing great! :-D :-D

No answers from me but I will be watching for replies, thanks for asking as Hoot was in remission and now back. Hopefully he will be able to get back to the Falls one day and meet Gobbles. Congrats and have a great day :-D

Since you don't really know what Gobbles baseline BG was prior to diagnosis, I think this is just where Gobbles numbers sit. As long as he's acting happy and is healthy, I wouldn't worry.

I looked over his labs on his SS. It goes all the way back to 3/10/2009 and had lab results of BG readings (or would it be fructo tests as these were routine labs?) ran anywhere from 105 to 156 between then and 9/2012 (which was his last labs run up until that day (and when he was given depo steroid for flea allergy!!! Go figure, 2 months later--BAM! FD); so am I then to assume he was averaging about 130? Of course, when all of those labs were taken, he was eating a diet of high carb dry and mostly high carb wet food, along with high carb treats....

And he had vet stress during those old tests at the vet. It will interesting to see what his BGs are at his next lab test.

I agree with what the others have said. ECID. Some cats just naturally have lower BG numbers, just like people. As long as Gobbles is happy & healthy, I wouldn't worry. I hope he has a good vetty visit on Friday.

Hi Kat. Sorry I can't give an informed opinion on Gobbles BG numbers but I did want to drop in and say hi. It's nice to read an update on Gobbles and see that he is doing good OTJ. You guys keep up the good work. Have a great day.

My first diabetic kitty Margaret surprised us with a 28 one time right after her OTJ party at 2 weeks. She hadn't touched her food overnight (I think it was a flavor she didn't like) but she was eating normally the next day and had no problems. We also got a 36 here and a 43 there but since she wasn't on insulin, and was eating and acting fine, we weren't concerned.

Thanks everyone, so much, for stopping by and for your input! It will be interesting to see where his BG is at on Friday. He hasn't seen his vet since back in April, and I'm excited to bring in his SS and let him know that Gobbles is OTJ!!! I'll have to make his SS print out a little larger because last time I was there, he commented that the print was very small and hard to read. I suppose I can do this by monkeying with the % when the print box appears....

Gobbles has been a real handful, as usual. His new thing: He likes to hang out in the garage (only when the door is down!!!) and then be fed. I call him the "poor little stray kitty", to his face, then put a token amount of food down in the garage.....then do it over and over.... He has taken to whining to play the stray kitty thing at night...um...after we've gone to bed. He's been picking at his food, but then again, he's getting supplemental feedings when he turns into the stray kitty that someone left in our garage

So when he starts his stray kitty crap, in the middle of the night, his penance is to be stuffed in the bed with DH and I, while Mom here basically puts a vise grip on him

I'll post about his vet visit when I get the labs back....

My heart goes out to Kathie; I am shocked as I did not know Zeus was that ill. She'll be in my prayers tonight...

Wink has been running in the low 50's to high 90's for almost 4 months now. Lots of variability in the numbers. Mid 60's are probably his most common BG reading.

Civie Delta still gives me 40's, low ones at that.
Civie Monet gives me 50's to 60's.

ECID.

I don't worry about Wink's numbers. I do try to feed more of the lower carb <6% food. I keep an eye on the portions to make sure he does not gain too much weight and I monitor his weight weekly. So far so good.

I think those low BG readings that Gobbles is giving you, are simply his normal range. ;-)

I always like to test before I go to the vet. This way when Julia (or any other cat) shows higher there than they would at home, I know it can be explained by stress and I know what the true and unstressed number/range is that will return when we get home. Then the vet can't talk me into something because the cat is showing a higher number than normal.

I love the stray kitty game. That's hilarious!

Oh Kat, Great report on Gobbles! I LOVE the stray kitty game - these kitties are so smart

Can't wait to hear your vet report!

Jane

Hi Kat!

The one time I tested Brownie she threw me a 48. Cain's been in the 60s-70s for his trial. Though I am curious if he's going to stick around that later. Though now with Cain I'm worried about his weight. Got to fix that scale. But I have been trying to slowly reduce how much he's eating. And I think it works, till his sister starts complaining for food and he shows up going "don't forget me!" ohmygod_smile

Oh Gobbles.
