For those of you struggling with high numbers on increasing doses, you might find these pages on petdiabeteswikia useful - interesting at least. Especially the Glucose toxicity (GT) one. GT can create temporary insulin resistance (IR), which could explain why there seems to be little response to any dose of insulin. My understanding of how you deal with this is to raise the dose until you break the GT and, therefore, the IR. I think that when the GT breaks you may end up in a rebound (Somogyi) situation because the dose is suddenly too much, so it is also important to understand rebound patterns.

The Somogyi information made all the difference with Beau and probably greatly helped me to get him OTJ. I wish I had done more exploring on that site when I had trouble with Jeddie. When he went back on insulin he seemed to have numbers unrelated to his dose and also cycled into a few good days and out to bad numbers on about a 7-10 day cycle no matter what the dose was. I wonder if I had dramatically dropped his dose when he was in good numbers if I could have gotten him back OTJ or not? I will never know, but it is worth "stashing" that info for "next time".
